Abstract

A mobile device allows transmission of additional outgoing application data requests in response to occurrence of receipt of data transfer from a remote entity, user input in response to a prompt displayed to the user, and a change in a background status of an application executing on the mobile device. Additional outgoing application data requests are foreground application requests.

Claims (32)

1. A mobile device which improves network resource utilization in a wireless network, the mobile device, comprising:

a memory;

a radio; and

a processor coupled to the memory and configured to:

enter a power save mode based on a battery level of the mobile device;

while the mobile device is in the power save mode:

prevent outgoing background application data requests for more than one application from being transmitted from the mobile device over the wireless network;

allow additional outgoing foreground application data requests to be transmitted from the mobile device over the wireless network in response to receiving a notification of new data at an application server;

exit the power save mode based on a battery level of the mobile device; and

while the mobile device is not in the power save mode:

prevent outgoing foreground and background application data requests from being transmitted from the mobile device over the wireless network based on a received selection for each application.

2. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to allow additional outgoing foreground application data requests to be transmitted in response to receiving input in response to a prompt displayed to the user.

3. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to allow additional outgoing foreground application data requests to be transmitted in response to detecting a change in a background status of an application executing on the mobile device.

4. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive data in response to the allowed additional outgoing foreground application data requests.

5. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive data directed towards applications whose outgoing application data requests are prevented from being transmitted while the transmission of the additional foreground application data requests is prevented.

6. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive data directed towards applications whose outgoing application data requests are prevented from being transmitted after the transmission of the additional foreground application data requests is allowed.

7. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the notification of new data is received from an intermediary server that provides connectivity between the application server and the mobile device.

8. A method which improves network resource utilization in a wireless network, the method comprising:

at a mobile device:

entering a power save mode based on a battery level of the mobile device;

while the mobile device is in the power save mode:

preventing outgoing background application data requests for more than one application from being transmitted from the mobile device over the wireless network;

allowing additional outgoing foreground application data requests to be transmitted from the mobile device over the wireless network in response to receiving a notification of new data at an application server;

exiting the power save mode based on a battery level of the mobile device; and

while the mobile device is not in the power save mode:

preventing outgoing foreground and background application data requests from being transmitted from the mobile device over the wireless network based on a received selection for each application.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising allowing the additional outgoing foreground application data requests to be transmitted in response to receiving input in response to a prompt displayed to the user.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising allowing the additional outgoing foreground application data requests to be transmitted in response to detecting a change in a background status of an application executing on the mobile device.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving data in response to the allowed additional outgoing foreground application data requests.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving data directed towards applications whose outgoing application data requests are prevented from being transmitted while the transmission of the additional foreground application data requests is prevented.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving data directed towards applications whose outgoing application data requests are prevented from being transmitted after the transmission of the additional foreground application data requests is allowed.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the notification of new data is received from an intermediary server that provides connectivity between the application server and the mobile device.
