Abstract

A pump includes a drive chamber with a drive piston and a production chamber with a production piston. The drive piston is coupled to the production piston. The pump further includes a passage in fluidic communication with the drive piston and a port fluidically coupling the passage with the production chamber. In operation, a first pressure is applied to fluid in the passage, thereby moving the drive piston. Then a second higher pressure is applied to fluid in the passage, thereby opening a valve associated with the port. In an example operation, fluid flows from the passage into the production chamber, and flushes gas out of the production chamber, thereby alleviating gas-locking. In another example operation, fluid including a treatment chemical flows from the passage into the production chamber. A surface equipment package includes a controller configured to monitor and control operation of the pump.

Claims (40)

1. A pump comprising:

a drive chamber;

a production chamber having a fluid inlet configured to permit entry of fluids external to the pump into the production chamber;

a piston assembly comprising a drive piston axially movable within the drive chamber, and coupled to a production piston by a tube, the production piston axially movable within the production chamber by movement of the drive piston and the tube;

a passage in fluidic communication with a first side of the drive piston; and

a port fluidically coupling the passage with the production chamber;

wherein the tube fluidically couples the production chamber and the passage with a second side of the drive piston.

2. The pump of claim 1 , further comprising a valve in fluidic communication with the port.

3. The pump of claim 2 , wherein the valve is configured to allow a seepage of fluid through the port.

4. The pump of claim 2 , wherein the valve permits fluid flow into the production chamber through the port, and inhibits fluid flow out of the production chamber through the port.

5. The pump of claim 4 , wherein the valve is configured to open when a differential pressure across the valve reaches a first threshold value.

6. The pump of claim 5 , wherein the valve is configured to close when the differential pressure across the valve reaches a second threshold value lower than the first threshold value.

7. A method of operating a pump in a wellbore, comprising:

applying a first pressure to a fluid in a passage of the pump, thereby moving a drive piston in a first direction within a drive chamber and moving a production piston in the first direction within a production chamber, wherein:

the passage is in fluidic communication with a first side of the drive piston;

the production piston is coupled to the drive piston by a tube, and is moved in the first direction by movement of the drive piston and the tube; and

the production chamber has a fluid inlet configured to permit entry of fluids external to the pump into the production chamber;

then applying a second pressure to the fluid in the passage, the second pressure greater than the first pressure; and

injecting the fluid from the passage into the production chamber through a port;

wherein the tube fluidically couples the production chamber and the passage with a second side of the drive piston.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein applying the second pressure to the fluid opens a valve in the port.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the fluid injected through the port displaces gas in the production chamber.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising pressurizing the gas by injecting the fluid into the production chamber.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising causing the gas to flow through the tube coupling the drive piston with the production piston.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising reducing pressure applied to the fluid, thereby closing the valve.

13. A pump comprising:

a housing including:

a first connection configured to couple to a first fluid conduit; and

a second connection configured to couple to a second fluid conduit;

a drive chamber in the housing;

a production chamber in the housing having a fluid inlet configured to permit entry of fluids external to the pump into the production chamber;

a piston assembly comprising a drive piston axially movable within the drive chamber, and coupled to a production piston by a tube, the production piston axially movable within the production chamber by movement of the drive piston and the tube;

a passage in fluidic communication with the first connection and with a first side of the drive piston; and

a port fluidically coupling the passage with the production chamber;

wherein the tube fluidically couples the production chamber and the passage with a second side of the drive piston and the second connection.

14. The pump of claim 13 , further comprising a valve in fluidic communication with the port.

15. The pump of claim 14 , wherein the valve is configured to allow a seepage of fluid through the port.

16. The pump of claim 14 , wherein the valve permits the flow of fluid into the production chamber through the port, and inhibits the flow of fluid out of the production chamber through the port.

17. The pump of claim 16 , wherein the valve is configured to open when a differential pressure across the valve reaches a first threshold value.

18. The pump of claim 17 , wherein the valve is configured to close when the differential pressure across the valve reaches a second threshold value lower than the first threshold value.
