Abstract

A lighting device for attachment to a handheld electrosurgical instrument is disclosed, which includes an elongated housing having opposed proximal and distal end portions and defining an interior chamber containing a battery powered light assembly for illuminating a surgical site, the housing having at least one smoke evacuation passage that extends from an inlet located adjacent to or near the distal end portion of the housing to an outlet located adjacent to or near the proximal end portion of the housing for removing smoke generated at the surgical site.

Claims (26)

1 . A kit for performing a surgical procedure comprising:

a) a packaging enclosure;

b) a battery powered lighting device contained within the packaging enclosure configured for attachment to a handheld surgical instrument; and

c) a smoke evacuation nozzle assembly contained within the packaging enclosure configured for attachment to the lighting device,

wherein the smoke evacuation nozzle assembly and battery powered lighting device are configured for attachment in a plurality of discrete locations, the plurality of discrete locations including at least two opposing sides of the lighting device.

2 . A kit as recited in claim 1 , further comprising the handheld surgical instrument within the packaging enclosure.

3 . A kit as recited in claim 1 , wherein the smoke evacuation nozzle assembly includes an inlet nozzle, a smoke evacuation tube extending proximally from the inlet nozzle and a fitting at a proximal end of the smoke evacuation tube for connection with a smoke evacuator.

4 . A kit as recited in claim 3 , wherein a clamping mechanism is associated with the tube for selectively attaching the tube to a surgical instrument.

5 . A kit as recited in claim 1 , wherein the battery powered lighting device includes an interior cavity having an engagement collar with a cooperating spring for engaging a distal end portion of the handheld surgical instrument when it is received within the interior cavity.

6 . The kit as recited in claim 1 , wherein the battery powered lighting device includes an interior cavity having a flexible cantilevered foot for contacting a switching mechanism that causes LED light sources in the lighting device to illuminate when a distal end portion of the handheld surgical instrument is received within the interior cavity.

7 . The kit as recited in claim 1 , wherein the smoke evacuation nozzle assembly includes a first portion of a sliding connector and the lighting device includes a second portion of the sliding connector for mutual attachment between the smoke evacuation nozzle assembly and the lighting device.

8 . The kit as recited in claim 7 , wherein the first portion of the sliding connector is a tab and the second portion of the sliding connector is a slot.

9 . The kit as recited in claim 1 , wherein three discrete locations are distributed about a periphery of the lighting device.

10 . The kit as recited in claim 1 , wherein the lighting device is configured for attachment to and to be supported by the handheld surgical instrument, and the smoke evacuation nozzle assembly is configured for attachment to and to be supported by the lighting device.

11 . A kit for performing a surgical procedure comprising:

a) a packaging enclosure;

b) a handheld surgical instrument;

c) a battery powered lighting device contained within the packaging enclosure configured for attachment to the handheld surgical instrument, the battery powered lighting device including a housing; and

d) a smoke evacuation nozzle assembly contained within the packaging enclosure configured for attachment to an outside of the lighting device such that with the smoke evacuation nozzle attached to the lighting device, the smoke evacuation nozzle extends from an inlet nozzle proximate a distal end portion of the housing and along the housing to a smoke evacuation tube located near a proximal end portion of the housing.

12 . The kit as recited in claim 11 , wherein the smoke evacuation nozzle assembly is configured for attachment to the lighting device such that, when mutually attached, an inlet nozzle is arranged proximate to a distal end of the lighting device.

13 . The kit as recited in claim 11 , wherein the smoke evacuation nozzle assembly includes a first portion of a sliding connector and the lighting device includes a second portion of the sliding connector for mutual attachment between the smoke evacuation nozzle assembly and the lighting device.

14 . The kit as recited in claim 13 , wherein the first portion of the sliding connector is a tab and the second portion of the sliding connector is a slot.

15 . The kit as recited in claim 11 , wherein the smoke evacuation nozzle assembly and lighting device are configured for attachment in a plurality of discrete locations.

16 . The kit as recited in claim 15 , wherein the plurality of discrete locations includes at least two opposing sides of the lighting device.

17 . The kit as recited in claim 15 , wherein three discrete locations are distributed about a periphery of the lighting device.

18 . The kit as recited in claim 11 , wherein the lighting device is configured for attachment to and to be supported by the handheld surgical instrument, and the smoke evacuation nozzle assembly is configured for attachment to and to be supported by the lighting device.
