Abstract

A disclosed screening apparatus includes a subgrid, and a screen element attached to the subgrid via laser welding at a plurality of attachment positions such that, under vibrational excitation, the screen element has a pre-determined profile of vibrational motion relative to the subgrid. The screen element may be attached at a maximal number of attachment locations to the subgrid to minimize relative motion of the screen element and the subgrid under vibrational excitation, or the screen element may be attached a sub-set of the maximal number of attachment locations to allow vibrational motion of the screen element relative to the subgrid. A disclosed method may include attaching a plurality of screen elements to a respective plurality of subgrids, attaching the plurality of subgrids to one another to form a screening pre-assembly, and cutting edges of the screening pre-assembly to form the screen assembly having a perimeter with a pre-determined shape.

Claims (28)

1. A method of forming a screen unit, comprising:

providing a screen element that includes end members, side members, reinforcement members that extend between the side members and a screening surface having a plurality of screening openings formed between adjacent pairs of screen surface elements, wherein screen element attachment arrangements are provided on bottom surfaces of the end members, the side members and the reinforcement members;

providing a support element that includes end members, side members and support members that extend between the side members, wherein support element attachment arrangements that are configured to mate with corresponding screen element attachment arrangements are provided on top surfaces of the end members, the side members and the support members; and

attaching a bottom of the screen element to a top of the support element to form a screen unit by joining selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements to corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements such that no screen element attachment arrangements located on a central portion of the screen element are attached to support element attachment arrangements and such that the central portion of the screen element is free to move with respect to the support element when the screen unit is vibrated.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the screen element attachment arrangements comprise cavities formed on bottom surfaces of the end members, side members and reinforcement members of the screen element and wherein the support element attachment members comprise projections formed on top surfaces of the end members, side members and support members of the support element.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein joining selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements to corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements comprises causing the material of the selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements to fuse with the material of corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein joining selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements to corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements comprises laser welding the material of the selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements to the material of corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein joining selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements to corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements comprises joining screen element attachment arrangements on a central reinforcement member that bisects the screen element to support element attachment arrangements on a central support member that bisects the support element such that two central portions of the screen element on opposite sides of the central reinforcement member and the central support member are free to move with respect to the support element when the screen unit is vibrated.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the screening openings in the screen element have a width of between approximately 43 microns and approximately 1000 microns.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the screen element has an open screening area of approximately 16% or more of a total area of a top surface of the screen element.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the screen element has an open screening area of between approximately 13% and approximately 32% of a total area of a top surface of the screen element.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the support element includes joining elements that are located on side surfaces of the support element, wherein the joining elements are configured to attach the support element to another support element.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the joining elements comprise clips and clip apertures that are configured to attach to corresponding clips and clip apertures of another support element to attach the support elements to each other.

11. A method of forming a screen assembly, comprising:

forming a plurality of screen units by:

providing a plurality of screen elements, wherein each screen element includes end members, side members, reinforcement members that extend between the side members and a screening surface having a plurality of screening openings formed between adjacent pairs of screen surface elements, wherein screen element attachment arrangements are provided on bottom surfaces of the end members, the side members and the reinforcement members;

providing a plurality of support elements that includes end members, side members and support members that extend between the side members, wherein support element attachment arrangements that are configured to mate with corresponding screen element attachment arrangements are provided on top surfaces of the end members, the side members and the support members; and

attaching a bottom of each screen element to a top of a support element to form a plurality of screen units, wherein each screen element is attached to a support element by joining selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements of the screen element to corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements of the support element such that no screen element attachment arrangements located on a central portion of the screen element are attached to support element attachment arrangements and such that the central portion of the screen element is free to move with respect to the support element when the screen unit is vibrated; and

attaching the plurality of screen units to each other to form the screen assembly.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the screen element attachment arrangements comprise cavities formed on bottom surfaces of the end members, side members and reinforcement members of the screen elements and wherein the support element attachment members comprise projections formed on top surfaces of the end members, side members and support members of the support elements.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein joining selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements of a screen element to corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements of a support element comprises causing the material of the selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements to fuse with the material of corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein joining selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements of a screen element to corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements of a support element comprises laser welding the material of the selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements to the material of corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein joining selected ones of the screen element attachment arrangements of a screen element to corresponding ones of the support element attachment arrangements of a support element comprises joining screen element attachment arrangements on a central reinforcement member that bisects the screen element to support element attachment arrangements on a central support member that bisects the support element such that two central portions of the screen element on opposite sides of the central reinforcement member and the central support member are free to move with respect to the support element when the screen unit is vibrated.
