Abstract

A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a computing device having a controller to modify sound produced by a gaming application according to an otological profile of a user. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (38)

1. A computing device, comprising:

a memory storing instructions; and

a controller coupled to the memory, wherein the controller, responsive to executing the instructions, performs operations comprising:

identifying a particular sound, corresponding to footsteps, that is generated by a software application executing on a device integral with or communicatively coupled with the computing device, wherein the software application has associated therewith an otological profile of a user of the computing device;

adjusting the otological profile based upon the particular sound corresponding to the footsteps, resulting in an adjusted otological profile;

sampling a sound of the software application to obtain a first time domain signal;

translating the first time domain signal to a frequency domain signal;

processing the frequency domain signal according to the adjusted otological profile to create a processed signal;

translating the processed signal to a second time domain signal to obtain an adjusted sound, wherein the adjusted sound has a frequency shifted from that of the sound; and

audibly presenting the adjusted sound by way of equipment used by the user.

2. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the otological profile is determined from an audio test performed on the user.

3. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the instructions comprise an accessory management software (AMS) application.

4. The computing device of claim 3 , wherein the AMS application is integral with the software application.

5. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the software application includes an interactive component for determining the otological profile of the user.

6. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the otological profile describes a hearing ability of the user over a spectral segment of the user's ability to sense audio, or an audio preference of the user.

7. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise receiving the otological profile from another device that determines the otological profile of the user.

8. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the otological profile is obtained responsive to a selection by the user.

9. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise modifying an amplitude of the adjusted sound before audibly presenting the adjusted sound.

10. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the otological profile is determined from an audio test performed by a physician.

11. A method comprising:

detecting, by a system comprising a processor, a particular sound generated by a software application that has associated therewith an otological profile of a user, wherein the particular sound is generated by the software application in a specific spectral segment identified in the otological profile, and wherein the particular sound corresponds to footsteps;

adjusting, by the system, the otological profile based upon the particular sound corresponding to the footsteps, resulting in an adjusted otological profile;

modifying, by the system, a sound in accordance with the adjusted otological profile to obtain a modified sound; and

audibly presenting, by the system, the modified sound,

wherein the otological profile is generated from a hearing test performed by the user, the modifying comprises adjusting spectral aspects of the sound, and the modified sound has a frequency shifted from that of the sound.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the software application includes an interactive component for determining the otological profile of the user.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising performing the hearing test to generate the otological profile.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the hearing test that generates the otological profile is performed by a device other than the system.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the method further comprises adjusting, by the system, an amplitude of the modified sound before audibly presenting the modified sound.

16. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium comprising executable instructions which, responsive to being executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

detecting a particular sound generated by a software application that has associated therewith an otological profile of a user, wherein the particular sound is generated by the software application in a specific spectral segment identified in the otological profile of the user, and wherein the particular sound corresponds to a weapon reload;

adjusting the otological profile based upon the particular sound corresponding to the weapon reload, resulting in an adjusted otological profile;

modifying a sound in accordance with a spectral adjustment defined in the adjusted otological profile to obtain a modified sound having a frequency shifted from that of the sound; and

presenting the modified sound, wherein an ability of the user to hear the modified sound is enhanced relative to the sound.

17. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the executable instructions are embedded in the software application.

18. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the operations further comprise performing a hearing test to generate the otological profile.

19. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the operations further comprise adjusting an amplitude of the modified sound before presenting the modified sound.

20. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the otological profile is determined from an audio test performed by a physician.
