Abstract

Systems and methods for the intravascular treatment of clot material within a blood vessel of a human patient are disclosed herein. A method in accordance with embodiments of the present technology can include, for example, positioning a distal portion of a catheter proximate to the clot material within the blood vessel. The method can further include coupling a pressure source to the catheter via a tubing subsystem including a valve or other fluid control device and, while the valve is closed, activating the pressure source to charge a vacuum. The valve can then be opened to apply the vacuum to the catheter to thereby aspirate at least a portion of the clot material from the blood vessel and into the catheter.

Claims (35)

1. A method of filtering clot material from blood, the method comprising:

coupling a first syringe containing blood and clot material to a first connector of a filter device;

coupling a second syringe to a second connector of the filter device;

depressing a plunger of the first syringe to drive the blood and clot material into a chamber of the filter device; and

withdrawing a plunger of the second syringe to draw the blood through a filter within the chamber of the filter device and into the second syringe, wherein the filter is sized to inhibit the clot material from passing therethrough.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first syringe is a vacuum-pressure locking syringe.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing a cap of the filter device to provide access to the clot material.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising actuating a fluid control device of the filter device to fluidly couple the first syringe to the chamber.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the fluid control device is a stopcock.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the first connector is a quick-release connector.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein coupling the first syringe to the first connector includes coupling a first tip of the first syringe to the first connector, wherein coupling the second syringe to the second connector includes coupling a second tip of the second syringe to the second connector, and wherein the first tip is different than the second tip.

8. A method for the intravascular treatment of clot material from within a blood vessel of a human patient, the method comprising

positioning a distal portion of a catheter proximate to the clot material within the blood vessel;

coupling a first syringe to the catheter via a fluid control device, wherein (a) opening of the fluid control device fluidly connects the first syringe to the catheter and (b) closing of the fluid control device fluidly disconnects the first syringe from the catheter;

withdrawing a plunger of the first syringe to generate a vacuum while the fluid control device is closed;

opening the fluid control device to apply the vacuum to the catheter to thereby aspirate blood and at least a portion of the clot material through the catheter and into the first syringe;

coupling the first syringe to a first connector of a filter device;

depressing the plunger of the first syringe to drive the blood and the portion of the clot material into a chamber of the filter device; and

withdrawing a plunger of a second syringe coupled to a second syringe of the filter device to draw the blood through a filter within the chamber of the filter device and into the second syringe, wherein the filter is sized to inhibit the clot material from passing therethrough.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising reintroducing the blood from the second syringe into the patient.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

decoupling the second syringe from the second connector;

coupling the second syringe to a medical device fluidly coupled to a vasculature of the patient; and

depressing the plunger of the second syringe to drive the blood from the second syringe into the vasculature of the patient.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising, after depressing the plunger of the first syringe to drive the blood and the portion of the clot material into the chamber of the filter device:

recoupling the first syringe to the catheter;

withdrawing the plunger of the first syringe to generate an additional vacuum while the fluid control device is closed; and

opening the fluid control device to apply the additional vacuum to the catheter to thereby aspirate blood and at least another portion of the clot material through the catheter and into the first syringe.

The method of claim 8 wherein the first syringe is a vacuum-pressure locking syringe having tip defining a bore, wherein the bore has a first diameter, wherein the catheter defines a lumen having a second diameter of 9 French or greater, and wherein the first diameter is greater than the second diameter.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising removing a cap of the filter device to provide access to the clot material.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises:

decoupling the second syringe from the second connector;

coupling the second syringe to a medical device fluidly coupled to a vasculature of a patient; and

depressing the plunger of the second syringe to drive the blood from the second syringe into the vasculature of the patient.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises introducing the blood from the second syringe to within a vasculature of a patient.
