Abstract

System and means soil stabilization and moisture control for building foundations including methods and systems for stabilization moisture in a site for building foundation by applying soil moisture stabilization material in various forms, a preferred stabilization material being a mixture of aluninosilicate Pozzolan mineral and granular material such as sand.

Claims (27)

1 . A system to improve the soil moisture stability of a building foundation site, comprising;

a water permeable soil moisture stabilization material that improves the soil's ability to retain and transport moisture;

means for disposing the soil moisture stabilization material into soil on the building foundation site; and

means for delivering liquid to at least some portion of the moisture stabilization material.

2 . The system of claim 1 wherein the soil moisture stabilization material placed in holes in the soil on the building foundation site.

3 . The system of claim 2 wherein the holes containing soil moisture stabilization material are placed in the location that will comprise the building foundation location prior to placement of the foundation.

4 . The system of claim 3 wherein the soil moisture stabilization material is wetted prior to placement of the building foundation.

5 . The system of claim 1 wherein the soil moisture stabilization material comprises the porous aluminosilicate mineral Pozzolan.

6 . The system of claim 1 wherein the soil moisture stabilization material is mixed into the surface of the indigenous soil on the building site.

7 . The system of claim 2 wherein the soil moisture stabilization material is disposed in vertical holes and is encased in Tyvex™ fabric.

8 . The system of claim 7 wherein the soil moisture stabilization material is disposed in perforated and/or open bottom pipe and encased in Tyvex™ fabric placed in vertical holes.

9 . The system of claim 7 wherein water is supplied to the perimeter of the building foundation in perforated pipe encased in Tyvex™ fabric laid in trenches around at least a portion of the perimeter.

10 . The system of claim 1 wherein the means for delivering liquid to the soil moisture stabilization material comprise conduits extending from a controllable source of liquid to a position in the soil moisture stabilization material.

11 . The system of claim 1 wherein the soil moisture stabilization material placed adjacent a building foundation and has a moisture barrier material disposed in one or more positions not in direct contact with the foundation.

12 . A method for stabilizing the moisture content of the soil of a building site comprising;

applying a water permeable soil moisture stabilization material to improve the soil's ability to retain and transport moisture, said stabilization material being placed under, around or adjacent a building foundation or any combination of such locations thereof

13 . The method of claim 12 comprising the steps of:

grading the building site to provide a surface for a building foundation;

adding a soil moisture stabilization material to the soil of the building site; and

adding means to controllably supply and control the flow of moisture to at least some of the soil moisture stabilization material.

14 . The method of claim 13 wherein the soil moisture stabilization material is tilled into the soil of the building site.

15 . The method of claim 12 wherein the soil moisture stabilization material is disposed in trenches or holes on the building site.

16 . The system of claim 12 wherein the soil moisture stabilization material is disposed in vertical holes and is encased in Tyvex™ fabric.

17 . The system of claim 7 wherein the soil moisture stabilization material is disposed in perforated and/or open bottom pipe encased in Tyvex™ fabric placed in vertical holes.

18 . The system of claim 12 wherein water is supplied to the perimeter of the building foundation in perforated pipe encased in Tyvex™ fabric laid in trenches around at least a portion of the perimeter.

19 . The system of claim 12 also comprising adding conduits extending from a controllable source of liquid to a position in the soil moisture stabilization material.

20 . The method of claim 12 comprising placing a liquid barrier layer in the moisture stabilization material in a location selected from the group consisting of adjacent to but away from the foundation side surface, under or over the soil stabilization material or any combination of these locations.
