Abstract

An optical connector holding two or more LC-type optical ferrules is provided. The optical connector includes an outer body, an inner front body accommodating the two or more LC-type optical ferrules, ferrule springs for urging the optical ferrules towards a mating connection, and a back body for supporting the ferrule springs. A removable inner front body for polarity change is disclosed. A multi-purpose rotatable boot assembly for polarity change is disclosed. The multi-purpose boot assembly can be pushed and pulled to insert and remove the micro connector from an adapter receptacle.

Claims (36)

1. An optical fiber connector for terminating a cable comprising a jacket surrounding a plurality of optical fibers, the optical fiber connector comprising:

at least one ferrule configured for terminating one or more optical fibers;

a connector housing assembly including a front body and a back body holding the at least one ferrule such that the at least one ferrule extends forward along a longitudinal axis of the optical fiber connector from the front body; and

a boot assembly having a front end and a rear end spaced apart along the longitudinal axis, the boot assembly comprising a boot defining the rear end of the boot assembly and an alignment key defining the front end of the boot assembly, the boot assembly configured to couple to the connector housing assembly such that the boot extends rearward of the connector housing assembly for surrounding the jacket of the cable and the alignment key is disposed on one side of the connector housing assembly,

wherein the optical fiber connector is configured to mate with an adapter having a keyway along a first wall of the adapter, the alignment key configured to be slidably received in the keyway as the optical fiber connector is mated with the adapter, and

wherein the optical fiber connector is configured to latch with the adapter when mated with the adapter, the boot assembly configured to be displaced rearward in relation to the front body and the back body to actuate the optical fiber connector to unlatch from the adapter.

2. The optical fiber connector of claim 1 , wherein as the boot assembly is displaced rearward to actuate the optical fiber connector to unlatch from the adapter, the alignment key is configured to slide rearward in the keyway.

3. The optical fiber connector of claim 1 , wherein the boot assembly is movable as a unit in relation to rest part of the connector housing assembly.

4. The optical fiber connector of claim 1 , wherein the boot assembly is rotatable as a unit in relation to the connector housing assembly.

5. The optical fiber connector of claim 4 , wherein the boot assembly is rotatable as a unit in relation to the connector housing assembly while the boot assembly is disposed on the cable.

6. The optical fiber connector of claim 5 , wherein the boot assembly is configured to selectively couple to the connector housing assembly in each of a first polarity orientation and a second polarity orientation, the second polarity orientation being offset from the first polarity orientation about 180°.

7. The optical fiber connector of claim 6 , wherein the alignment key is configured to be disposed on a first side of the connector housing assembly when the boot assembly is coupled to the connector housing assembly in the first polarity orientation whereby the boot assembly configures the optical fiber connector to have a first polarity.

8. The optical fiber connector of claim 7 , wherein the alignment key is configured to be disposed on a second side of the connector housing assembly opposite the first side when the boot assembly is coupled to the connector housing assembly in the second polarity orientation whereby the boot assembly configures the optical fiber connector to have a second polarity.

9. The optical fiber connector of claim 8 , wherein when the optical fiber connector has the first polarity:

the optical fiber connector is configured to mate with the adapter if upright so the first side of the connector housing assembly is oriented to face toward the first wall of the adapter and the second side of the connector housing assembly is oriented to face away from the first wall of the adapter; and

the optical fiber connector interferes with the adapter to prevent mating if inverted so the second side of the connector housing assembly is oriented to face toward the first wall of the adapter and the first side of the connector housing assembly is oriented to face away from the first wall of the adapter.

10. The optical fiber connector of claim 9 , wherein when the optical fiber connector has the second polarity:

the optical fiber connector is configured to mate with the adapter if upright so the second side of the connector housing assembly is oriented to face toward the first wall of the adapter and the first side of the connector housing assembly is oriented to face away from the first wall of the adapter; and

the optical fiber connector interferes with the adapter to prevent mating if inverted so the first side of the connector housing assembly is oriented to face toward the first wall of the adapter and the second side of the connector housing assembly is oriented to face away from the first wall of the adapter.

11. The optical fiber connector of claim 1 , wherein the boot assembly further comprises first and second boot hooks configured to releasably couple the boot assembly to the connector housing assembly.

12. The optical fiber connector of claim 11 , wherein the first and second boot hooks are spaced apart on diametrically opposite sides of the longitudinal axis.

13. The optical fiber connector of claim 11 , wherein the first and second boot hooks are releasable from the connector housing assembly to allow the boot assembly to rotate on the fiber optic cable 180°.

14. An optical fiber connector for terminating a cable comprising a jacket surrounding a plurality of optical fibers, the optical fiber connector comprising:

at least one ferrule configured for terminating one or more optical fibers;

a connector housing assembly including a front body and a back body holding the at least one ferrule such that the at least one ferrule extends forward along a longitudinal axis of the optical fiber connector from the front body; and

a boot assembly having a front end and a rear end spaced apart along the longitudinal axis, the boot assembly comprising a boot defining the rear end of the boot assembly and an alignment key defining the front end of the boot assembly, the boot assembly configured to couple to the connector housing assembly such that the boot extends rearward of the connector housing assembly for surrounding the jacket of the cable and the alignment key is disposed on one side of the connector housing assembly,

wherein the optical fiber connector is configured to mate with an adapter having a keyway along a first wall of the adapter, the alignment key configured to be slidably received in the keyway as the optical fiber connector is mated with the adapter, and

wherein the optical fiber connector is configured to latch with the adapter when mated with the adapter, the boot assembly configured to be displaced rearward in relation to the front body and the back body to actuate the optical fiber connector to unlatch from the adapter;

wherein the boot assembly further comprises first and second boot hooks configured to releasably couple the boot assembly to the connector housing assembly;

wherein the first boot hook and the alignment key are radially spaced apart from the longitudinal axis in a first direction and the second boot hook is radially spaced apart from the longitudinal axis in a second direction opposite the first direction.

15. The optical fiber connector of claim 14 , wherein boot assembly is configured so that the alignment key projects forward from the boot as a cantilever, the alignment key being spaced apart radially outward from the first boot hook.

16. The optical fiber connector of claim 1 , wherein the boot assembly is configured so that the alignment key projects forward from the boot as a cantilever.

17. The optical fiber connector of claim 1 , wherein the optical fiber connector is a multi-fiber connector.
