Abstract

Prosthetic heart valves described herein can be deployed using a transcatheter delivery system and technique to interface and anchor in cooperation with the anatomical structures of a native heart valve. Some embodiments of prosthetic valves described herein include an anchor portion that couples to the anatomy near a native valve, and a valve portion that is mateable with the anchor portion. In some such embodiments, the anchor portion and/or the deployment system includes one or more prosthetic elements that temporarily augment or replace the sealing function of the native valve leaflets.

Claims (24)

1. A prosthetic mitral valve and deployment system, comprising:

the prosthetic mitral valve comprising:

an anchor assembly comprising an expandable anchor frame coupleable with a native mitral valve having an anterior leaflet and a posterior leaflet that cycle between an open valve orientation and a closed valve orientation in which free edges of the anterior and posterior leaflets oppose each other to define a coaptation line, wherein while the anchor assembly is coupled with the native mitral valve the anterior and posterior leaflets continue to cycle: and

a valve assembly selectively coupleable with the anchor assembly; and

the deployment system comprising multiple catheters configured to deliver the prosthetic mitral valve, wherein at least some of the catheters are releasably coupleable to the prosthetic mitral valve,

wherein a first catheter of the multiple catheters is releasably coupleable to the anchor assembly and includes an expandable element that is positioned along the coaptation line between the free edges of the anterior and posterior leaflets.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the expandable element comprises a selectively expandable balloon.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the expandable element comprises a self-expanding wireframe and a covering material attached thereto.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the expandable element comprises a passively-expandable, flexible sock member.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the anchor assembly comprises a hub that is positioned inferior to the annulus of the native mitral valve while the anchor assembly is coupled with the native mitral valve, and wherein the first catheter is releasably coupleable to the hub.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the expandable element is coupled to an outer diameter of the first catheter.

7. The system of claim 6 , further comprising a second catheter configured to slide over the first catheter, and the second catheter is configured to diametrically constrain the expandable element.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the expandable element is configured to expand into a generally cylindrical shape.

9. A deployment system for a prosthetic mitral valve, the deployment system comprising:

a plurality of catheters configured to deliver the prosthetic mitral valve;

a first catheter of the plurality of catheters configured to deliver an anchor assembly of the prosthetic mitral valve and an expandable element;

wherein the anchor assembly comprises an expandable anchor frame coupleable with a native mitral valve having an anterior leaflet and a posterior leaflet that cycle between an open valve orientation and a closed valve orientation in which free edges of the anterior and posterior leaflets oppose each other to define a coaptation line, wherein while the anchor assembly is coupled with the native mitral valve the anterior and posterior leaflets continue to cycle; and

wherein the expandable element is positioned along the coaptation line between the free edges of the anterior and posterior leaflets.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the expandable element is coupled to an outer diameter of the first catheter.

11. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a second catheter configured to slide over the first catheter, and the second catheter is configured to diametrically constrain the expandable element.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the expandable element comprises a selectively expandable balloon.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the expandable element comprises a self-expanding wireframe and a covering material attached thereto.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the expandable element comprises a passively-expandable, flexible sock member.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the expandable element is configured to extend across the coaptation line during a contracted state, and selectively expand to occupy open space between the free edges of the native leaflets.
