Abstract

Silk performance apparel and methods of preparing the same are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, silk performance apparel includes textiles, fabrics, consumer products, and other materials that are coated with aqueous solutions of pure silk fibroin-based protein fragments. In some embodiments, coated apparel products exhibit surprisingly improved moisture management properties and increased resistance to microbial growth.

Claims (29)

1. An article comprising a fabric having a coating, the coating comprising silk fibroin protein fragments having a weight average molecular weight selected from about 140 kDa to about 145 kDa, from about 145 kDa to about 150 kDa, from about 150 kDa to about 155 kDa, from about 155 kDa to about 160 kDa, from about 160 kDa to about 165 kDa, from about 165 kDa to about 170 kDa, from about 170 kDa to about 175 kDa, from about 175 kDa to about 180 kDa, from about 180 kDa to about 185 kDa, from about 185 kDa to about 190 kDa, from about 190 kDa to about 195 kDa, or from about 195 kDa to about 200 kDa, and a polydispersity between 1 and about 5,

wherein the silk fibroin protein fragments, prior to coating the fabric, do not spontaneously or gradually gelate and do not visibly change in color or turbidity when in a solution for at least 10 days.

2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the silk fibroin protein fragments thereof comprise silk fibroin protein fragments having about 0.01% (w/w) to about 10% (w/w) sericin.

3. The article of claim 1 , wherein the silk fibroin protein fragments thereof are selected from the group consisting of natural silk fibroin protein fragments thereof, recombinant silk fibroin protein fragments thereof, and combinations thereof.

4. The article of claim 1 , wherein the silk fibroin protein fragments thereof are natural silk fibroin protein fragments thereof that are selected from the group consisting of spider silk fibroin protein fragments thereof, silkworm silk fibroin protein fragments thereof, and combinations thereof.

5. The article of claim 4 , wherein the natural silk fibroin protein fragments are silkworm silk fibroin protein fragments thereof, and the silkworm silk fibroin protein fragments thereof is Bombyx mori silk fibroin protein fragments thereof.

6. The article of claim 1 , wherein the coating comprises a copolymer.

7. The article of claim 1 , wherein the fabric comprises natural fibers or yarns, synthetic fibers or yarns, or combinations thereof.

8. The article of claim 1 , wherein the fabric comprises cotton, alpaca fleece, alpaca wool, lama fleece, lama wool, cotton, cashmere, sheep fleece, sheep wool, or combinations thereof.

9. The article of claim 1 , wherein the fabric comprises polyester, nylon, polyester-polyurethane copolymer, or combinations thereof.

10. The article of claim 1 , wherein the fabric exhibits an improved property, wherein the improved property is an accumulative one-way moisture transport index selected from the group consisting of greater than 40%, greater than 60%, greater than 80%, greater than 100%, greater than 120%, greater than 140%, greater than 160%, and greater than 180%.

12. The article of claim 1 , wherein the fabric exhibits an improved property, wherein the improved property is an accumulative one way transport capability increase relative to uncoated the fabric prior to coating selected from the group consisting of 1.2 fold, 1.5 fold, 2.0 fold, and 3.0 fold.

13. The article of claim 11 , wherein the overall moisture management capability is determined after a period of machine washing cycles selected from the group consisting of 5 cycles, 10 cycles, 25 cycles, and 50 cycles.

14. The article of claim 1 , wherein the fabric exhibits substantially no increase in microbial growth after a number of machine washing cycles selected from the group consisting of 5 cycles, 10 cycles, 25 cycles, and 50 cycles.

15. The article of claim 14 , wherein the microbial growth is microbial growth of a microbe selected from the group consisting of Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae , and combinations thereof.

16. The article of claim 14 , wherein the microbial growth is reduced by a percentage selected from the group consisting of 50%, 100%, 500%, 1000%, 2000%, and 3000% compared to the fabric prior to coating.

17. The article of claim 1 , wherein the coating is applied to the fabric at a fiber or yarn level prior to forming the fabric.

18. The article of claim 1 , wherein the coating is applied to the fabric at a fabric level.

19. The article of claim 18 , wherein the fabric is bath coated.
