Abstract

Different types of media experiences can be developed based on characteristics of the consumer. “Linear” experiences may require execution of a pre-built script, although the script could be dynamically modified by a media production platform. Linear experiences can include guided audio tours that are modified or updated based on the location of the consumer. “Enhanced” experiences include conventional media content that is supplemented with intelligent media content. For example, turn-by-turn directions could be supplemented with audio descriptions about the surrounding area. “Freeform” experiences, meanwhile, are those that can continually morph based on information gleaned from a consumer. For example, a radio station may modify what content is being presented based on the geographical metadata uploaded by a computing device associated with the consumer.

Claims (55)

1. A non-transitory medium with instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving first input indicative of a selection of an audio-based experience at a first interface generated by a software program executing on an electronic device,

wherein the electronic device is one of multiple electronic devices through which the audio-based experience is to be played;

queuing audio content associated with the audio-based experience for download by the electronic device;

receiving second input indicative of a request to initiate the audio-based experience at a second interface generated by the software program executing on the electronic device;

causing the electronic device to initiate playback of the audio content;

receiving metadata that specifies a location of the electronic device during playback of the audio content;

adapting the audio-based experience based on the metadata;

receiving third input indicative of pace information of the multiple electronic devices during playback of the audio content; and

further adapting the audio-based experience of the multiple electronic devices based on the pace information.

2. The non-transitory medium of claim 1 , wherein the audio-based experience is further associated with non-audio content that is queued for download by the electronic device.

3. The non-transitory medium of claim 2 , wherein the non-audio content includes text, images, video, or any combination thereof.

4. The non-transitory medium of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device is part of a vehicle.

5. The non-transitory medium of claim 1 , wherein said adapting comprises:

removing an existing segment of the audio-based experience,

altering an existing segment of the audio-based experience, or

adding a new segment to the audio-based experience.

6. The non-transitory medium of claim 1 , wherein the processor is communicatively connected to the electronic device across a network.

7. The non-transitory medium of claim 1 , wherein the audio-based experience includes geotagged segments of audio content that are presented responsive to a determination that the electronic device has come within proximity of corresponding locations.

8. The non-transitory medium of claim 7 , wherein each geotagged segment of audio content is associated with a Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinate.

9. An electronic device comprising:

a memory that includes instructions for facilitating playback of media associated with a location-based experience,

wherein the instructions, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:

receive first input indicative of a selection of the location-based experience;

cause playback of the media associated with the location-based experience to be initiated;

examine metadata that specifies a location of the electronic device during playback of the media; and

alter the location-based experience by—

removing an existing media segment that is not relevant to the location of the electronic device, or

adding a new media segment that is relevant to the location of the electronic device;

receive second input indicative of usage information of multiple electronic devices during playback of the media; and

further alter the location-based experience of the multiple electronic devices based on the usage information.

10. The electronic device of claim 9 , wherein said examining is performed continually such that said altering is performed in real time as the location of the electronic device changes over time.

11. The electronic device of claim 9 , wherein said causing comprises:

transmitting a signal that is representative of the media to an output mechanism capable of presenting audio, video, or both.

12. The electronic device of claim 11 , wherein the processor is communicatively connected to the output mechanism across a network.

13. The electronic device of claim 9 , wherein each location specified in the metadata is defined by a Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinate.

14. The electronic device of claim 9 , wherein the media includes text, audio, video, or any combination thereof.

15. A method performed by a software program executing on an electronic device, the method comprising:

receiving a first input indicative of a selection of an audio-based experience made through an interface generated by the software program,

wherein the audio-based experience is associated with a series of audio segments that are arranged in sequence, and

wherein at least some of the audio segments are associated with geographical locations;

initiating playback of a first audio segment in the series of the audio segments;

monitoring a location of the electronic device during playback of the series of the audio segments;

for each audio segment that is associated with a corresponding geographical location,

initiating playback of that audio segment in response to a determination that the electronic device is within a predetermined proximity of the corresponding geographical location;

receiving a second input indicative of pace information of multiple electronic devices during playback of the series of the audio segments; and

altering the series of the audio segments of the multiple electronic devices based on the pace information.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

queuing the series of the audio segments for download by the electronic device in response to a determination that a current location of the electronic device is within a predetermined proximity of a starting location of the audio-based experience.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein said monitoring comprises:

examining, in real time, metadata generated by the electronic device that includes Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein said monitoring further comprises:

employing a modeling technique to infer the location of the electronic device based on a most recent GPS coordinate included in the metadata.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the modeling technique considers movement-related instructions, if any, that are provided to an individual as part of the audio-based experience.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the audio-based experience is a multimedia experience, and wherein at least some of the audio segments are associated with text, still images, video, virtual reality features, augmented reality features, or any combination thereof.
