Abstract

Systems and methods for aligning a mobile device and a document are disclosed. An exemplary method comprises the steps of determining a model identifier from the mobile device; associating the model identifier with a device configuration from a source; receiving an image of the document taken by the camera of the mobile device; identifying a document type; associating the document type with a document configuration from the source; selecting an alignment feedback schema based on the device configuration and the document configuration; generating alignment feedback based on the image processing; detecting for a data connection between the mobile device and the document; and generating a connection indication when the data connection is detected.

Claims (47)

1. A computer-implemented method for aligning a device and a document of a type having an NFC antenna, the device having a display and a camera operative to capture images and produce video from the images and an NFC reader including an NFC antenna, the method comprising:

accessing a model identifier from the device;

associating the model identifier with a device configuration stored in a source, the device configuration including data indicative of a relative location of the NFC antenna of the device and a camera location at which the camera of the device captures the images;

associating the type of the document with a document configuration stored in a source, the document configuration including data indicative of a location of the NFC antenna of the document;

generating alignment feedback based on image processing of video of the document produced by the camera of the device, the device configuration and the document configuration, the image processing of the video further comprising processing video images of the document to:

(1) identify the document;

(2) identify a location of a document target on the document; and

(3) overlay a location of an image target on at least one live video image of the video images, the image target being a graphic overlay shown on the display of the device:

the alignment feedback including alignment indications produced according to alignment feedback schema and providing guidance to a user for aligning the NFC antenna of the device and the NFC antenna of the document, the aligning of the NFC antenna of the device and the NFC antenna of the document occurring when the camera of the device is aligned with the document target, the location of the document target being different than the location of the NFC antenna of the document;

detecting for a data connection between the device and the document; and

generating a connection indication when the data connection is detected.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the accessing of the model identifier comprises reading one of a processor readable number, sequence of numbers, ACII string, or other encoded processor readable string that identifies a model of the device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device configuration also includes data indicative of at least one of a strength indicator of the NFC reader of the device, whether the device supports haptic feedback, vibration modes, audio and tone capabilities, and information regarding controllable LEDs.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifying the document comprises capturing an image of text on the document and processing the image of the text.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alignment feedback schema is based on user preferences.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the user preferences include a preference for display graphics or visual feedback to be used for alignment feedback.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the user preferences include a preference for haptic feedback to be used for alignment feedback.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the user preferences include a preference for tones or audio information for guidance to be used for alignment feedback.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the user preferences include the preference for visual feedback comprising one of overlays, LEDs on the device, and camera light.

10. A system for aligning a device and a document of a type having an NFC antenna, the device having a display and a camera operative to capture images and produce video from the images and an NFC reader including an NFC antenna, the system comprising:

a processor operatively connected to the camera to receive the images captured by the camera; and

memory storing information of the device and the document and executable instructions,

the processor being operatively connected to the memory to receive the instructions stored in the memory and configured to control the system to:

access a model identifier from the device;

associate the model identifier with a device configuration stored in the memory, the device configuration including data indicative of a relative location of the NFC antenna of the device and a camera location at which the camera of the device captures the images;

associate the type of the document with a document configuration stored in the memory, the document configuration including data representative of a relative location of the NFC antenna of the document;

generate alignment feedback based on image processing of video of the document, the device configuration and the document configuration, the image processing further comprising processing video images of the document to:

(1) identify the document;

(2) identify a location of a document target on the document; and

(3) overlay a location of an image target on at least one live video image of the video images, the image target being a graphic overlay shown on the display of the device:

the alignment feedback including alignment indications produced according to alignment feedback schema and providing guidance to a user for aligning the NFC antenna of the device and the NFC antenna of the document, the aligning of the NFC antenna of the device and the NFC antenna of the document occurring when the camera of the device is aligned with the document target, the location of the document target being different than the location of the NFC antenna of the document;

detect for a data connection between the device and the document; and

generate a connection indication when the data connection is detected.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to read as the model identifier one of a processor readable number, sequence of numbers, ACII string, or other encoded processor readable string that identifies a model of the device.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the memory also stores information of at least one of a strength indicator of the NFC reader of the device, data on whether the device supports haptic feedback, vibration modes, audio and tone capabilities, and information regarding controllable LEDs.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to read text on the document to determine the document type.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to control the device to provide the alignment feedback schema based on user preferences.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is configured to control the device to generate display graphics or other visual feedback as the alignment feedback.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is configured to control the device to produce haptic feedback as the alignment feedback.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is configured to control the device to generate tones or other audio information as the alignment feedback.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to control the device to generate one of overlays, LEDs on the device, and camera light as the alignment feedback.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the alignment indications comprise a first user indicator when the NFC antenna of the device is getting closer to being in alignment with the NFC antenna of the document and a second user indicator when the NFC antenna of the device is moving farther from being in alignment with the NFC antenna of the document.
