Abstract

Systems, methods, and apparatus to identify media devices are disclosed. An example network communications monitor includes network interface circuitry, computer readable instructions, and processor circuitry. The processor circuitry is to execute the computer readable instructions to detect, via the network interface circuitry, multiple network communications transmitted on a home network within the household, access panelist data that associates a panelist of the household with a panelist device of the panelist, determine, based on the panelist data, that one or more of the multiple network communications are associated with the panelist device, and cause storage of data identifying the one or more network communications in association with the panelist.

Claims (67)

1. A network communications monitor configured to be installed at a panelist household of an audience measurement entity, the network communications monitor configured for monitoring media devices that are connected to a local area network (LAN) hosted by a router located at the panelist household, the network communications monitor comprising:

a network interface for connecting the network communications monitor to the router;

at least one processor; and

a non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored therein instructions that, upon execution by the at least one processor, cause the network communications monitor to perform operations comprising:

detecting, via the network interface of the network communications monitor, a media device that is connected to the LAN and is separate from the network communications monitor, wherein the media device is configured for receiving media from a media provider for presentation at the panelist household,

identifying a media access control (MAC) address of a network interface of the media device,

determining, using the MAC address, that the media device is a new device that has been added to the LAN, and

based on determining that the media device is a new device that has been added to the LAN, transmitting, to the audience measurement entity via the network interface of the network communications monitor, a new-device alert, wherein reception of the new-device alert by the audience measurement entity enables the audience measurement entity to contact a panelist of the panelist household to inquire about the new device.

2. The network communications monitor of claim 1 , wherein determining, using the MAC address, that the media device is a new device that has been added to the LAN comprises:

determining that the MAC address of the network interface of the media device is absent from a list of MAC addresses associated with panelist media devices of the panelist household; and

based on determining that the MAC address of the network interface of the media device is absent from the list of MAC addresses, determining that the media device is a new device that has been added to the LAN.

3. The network communications monitor of claim 2 , wherein the operations further comprise:

after transmitting the new-device alert, receiving, from the audience measurement entity via the network interface of the network communications monitor, data indicating that the media device is a panelist media device associated with a panelist of the panelist household; and

based on receiving the data, adding the MAC address of the network interface of the media device to the list of MAC addresses associated with panelist media devices of the panelist household.

4. The network communications monitor of claim 3 , wherein the operations further comprise:

inspecting traffic passing through the router;

detecting within the traffic a network communication between the media device and a media provider;

storing data identifying the network communication in association with the media device; and

transmitting, to the audience measurement entity via the network interface of the network communications monitor, the data identifying the network communication in association with the media device.

5. The network communications monitor of claim 1 , wherein:

the network interface of the network communications monitor is an Ethernet interface for connecting the network communications monitor to the router,

the LAN is a wireless LAN, and

the media device is wirelessly connected to the wireless LAN.

6. The network communications monitor of claim 5 , wherein the media device is a computer or a smartphone.

7. The network communications monitor of claim 1 , wherein identifying the MAC of the network interface of the media device comprises:

determining an internal IP address of the media device; and

identifying the MAC address of the network interface of the media device using a mapping of internal IP addresses to MAC addresses.

8. A method for monitoring media devices that are connected to a local area network (LAN) hosted by a router located at a panelist household, the method comprising:

detecting, by a network communications monitor installed at the panelist household, a media device that is connected to the LAN, wherein the network communications monitor is connected to the router via a network interface of the network communications monitor, and wherein the media device is configured for receiving media from a media provider for presentation at the panelist household;

identifying, by the network communications monitor, a media access control (MAC) address of a network interface of the media device;

determining, by the network communications monitor using the MAC address, that the media device is a new device that has been added to the LAN; and

based on determining that the media device is a new device that has been added to the LAN, transmitting, by the network communications monitor to an audience measurement entity via the network interface of the network communications monitor, a new-device alert, wherein reception of the new-device alert by the audience measurement entity enables the audience measurement entity to contact a panelist of the panelist household to inquire about the new device.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining, using the MAC address, that the media device is a new device that has been added to the LAN comprises:

determining that the MAC address of the network interface of the media device is absent from a list of MAC addresses associated with panelist media devices of the panelist household; and

based on determining that the MAC address of the network interface of the media device is absent from the list of MAC addresses, determining that the media device is a new device that has been added to the LAN.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

after transmitting the new-device alert, receiving, by the network communications monitor from the audience measurement entity via the network interface of the network communications monitor, data indicating that the the media device is a panelist media device associated with a panelist of the panelist household; and

based on receiving the data, adding, by the network communications monitor, the MAC address of the network interface of the media device to the list of MAC addresses associated with panelist media devices of the panelist household.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

inspecting, by the network communications monitor, traffic passing through the router;

detecting, by the network communications monitor, within the traffic a network communication between the media device and a media provider;

storing, by the network communications monitor, data identifying the network communication in association with the media device; and

transmitting, by the network communications monitor to the audience measurement entity via the network interface of the network communications monitor, the data identifying the network communication in association with the media device.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the network interface of the network communications monitor is an Ethernet interface,

the LAN is a wireless LAN, and

the media device is wirelessly connected to the wireless LAN.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the media device is a computer or a smartphone.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein identifying the MAC of the network interface of the media device comprises:

determining an internal IP address of the media device; and

identifying the MAC address of the network interface of the media device using a mapping of internal IP addresses to MAC addresses.

15. A method for monitoring media devices that are connected to a local area network (LAN) hosted by a router located at a panelist household, the method comprising:

detecting, by a network communications monitor installed at the panelist household, a media device that is connected to the LAN, wherein the network communications monitor is connected to the router via a network interface of the network communications monitor, and wherein the media device is configured for receiving media from a media provider for presentation at the panelist household;

identifying, by the network communications monitor, a media access control (MAC) address of a network interface of the media device;

determining, by the network communications monitor using the MAC address, that the media device is a new device that has been added to the LAN;

based on determining that the media device is a new device that has been added to the LAN, transmitting, by the network communications monitor to an audience measurement entity via the network interface of the network communications monitor, a new-device alert; and

based on receiving the new-device alert, contacting a panelist of the panelist household to inquire about the new device.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

obtaining data associating the media device with one of multiple panelists of the panelist household; and

adding, by the network communications monitor, the MAC address of the network interface of the media device to a list of MAC addresses associated with panelist media devices of the panelist household.

17. The method of claim 15 , where contacting the panelist of the panelist household comprises instructing the panelist to associate the media device with one of multiple panelists of the panelist household.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein contacting the panelist of the panelist household comprises calling the panelist of the panelist household.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein:

the network interface of the network communications monitor is an Ethernet interface,

the LAN is a wireless LAN, and

the media device is wirelessly connected to the wireless LAN.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the media device is a computer or a smartphone.
