Abstract

Multi-port power adapters. At least one example is a method including: supplying a first bus voltage to a first device by way of a DC-DC converter coupled to a link voltage; supplying a second bus voltage to a second device by way of a second DC-DC converter coupled to the link voltage; converting an AC voltage to the link voltage by way of an AC-DC converter; selecting, by a shunt regulator, a setpoint for the link voltage based on the first bus voltage and the second bus voltage; and regulating the link voltage to the setpoint by the AC-DC converter.

Claims (34)

1. A method comprising:

supplying a first bus voltage to a first device by a first DC-DC converter coupled to a link voltage;

supplying a second bus voltage to a second device by a second DC-DC converter coupled to the link voltage;

converting an AC voltage to the link voltage by way of an AC-DC converter;

generating, by a voltage divider coupled to the link voltage, a reference voltage based on the link voltage;

selecting, by a shunt regulator, a setpoint for the link voltage; and

creating, by the shunt regulator and based on the reference voltage and the setpoint, a feedback path signal for regulating the AC-DC converter to drive the link voltage to the setpoint.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein selecting the setpoint for the link voltage further comprises:

sensing, by the shunt regulator, a signal indicative of the first bus voltage;

sensing, by the shunt regulator, a signal indicative of the second bus voltage; and

generating, by the shunt regulator, a control signal that controls the setpoint, the generating based on the signal indicative of the first bus voltage and the signal indicative of the second bus voltage.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein generating the control signal further comprises generating the control signal such that the setpoint is the same or higher than the greater of the first bus voltage or the second bus voltage.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein generating the control signal further comprises generating the control signal such that the setpoint is between the first bus voltage and the second bus voltage.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein generating the control signal further comprises generating the control signal such that the setpoint is the same or lower than the lower of the first bus voltage or the second bus voltage.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein selecting the setpoint further comprises:

receiving, by the shunt regulator, a value indicative of the link voltage by way of a communication channel; and

generating, by the shunt regulator, a control signal that controls the setpoint, the generating based on the value indicative of the link voltage.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein selecting the setpoint for the link voltage further comprises:

receiving, by the shunt regulator, a value indicative of the first bus voltage and a value indicative of a first bus power provided to the first device, the receiving by way of a communication channel;

receiving, by the shunt regulator, a value indicative of the second bus voltage and a value indicative of a second bus power provided to the second device, the receiving by way of a communication channel; and

generating, by the shunt regulator, a control signal that controls the setpoint based on the higher of the first bus power or the second bus power.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein generating the control signal further comprises generating the control signal such that the setpoint is the same or higher than the first or the second bus voltage delivering higher power.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising increasing the setpoint by an amount determined by a current flow through an offset terminal of the shunt regulator.

10. A method comprising:

supplying a first bus voltage to a first device by a first DC-DC converter coupled to a link voltage;

supplying a second bus voltage to a second device by a second DC-DC converter coupled to the link voltage;

converting an AC voltage to the link voltage by way of an AC-DC converter;

generating, by a voltage divider coupled to the link voltage, a reference voltage based on the link voltage;

selecting, by a shunt regulator, a setpoint for the link voltage, the selecting by

receiving a value indicative of the first bus voltage by way of a communication channel,

receiving a value indicative of the second bus voltage by way of a communication channel, and

generating a control signal that controls the setpoint, the generating based on the value indicative of the first bus voltage and the value indicative of the second bus voltage; and

creating, by the shunt regulator and based on the reference voltage and the setpoint, a feedback path signal for regulating the AC-DC converter to drive the link voltage to the setpoint.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein generating the control signal further comprises at least one selected from a group comprising: generating the control signal such that the setpoint is the same or higher than the greater of the first bus voltage or the second bus voltage; generating the control signal such that setpoint is between the first bus voltage and the second bus voltage; and generating the control signal such that the setpoint is the same or lower than the lower of the first bus voltage or the second bus voltage.
