Abstract

Systems and devices to control rotational and/or arcuate motion are provided herein. In some examples, a hinge system is configured to replace a conventional door hinge and to control motion of the door. In some examples, a hinge system is configured to replace a conventional door hinge and to control motion of the door by employing a shear thickening fluid. In some examples, a door closure system is configured to replace a conventional door hinge and to control motion of the door by employing two opposing springs.

Claims (42)

1 . A device for controlling the closing of a door, comprising:

a housing that is configured to be installed in a door jamb or door edge, the housing comprising:

a chamber filled at least in part with a shear thickening fluid that is configured to have a decreasing viscosity in response to a first range of shear rates and an increasing viscosity in response to a second range of shear rates, wherein the second range of shear rates are greater than the first range of shear rates; and

a piston assembly connected to a cap, the piston assembly including a piston head and a rebound shim connected to the piston head by a plug, wherein the rebound shim can slide along the plug between the piston head and a shoulder of the plug, the piston assembly configured to exert pressure against the shear thickening fluid in response to a force applied to the cap such that motion of the door transitions from a first velocity to a second velocity when the shear thickening fluid correspondingly responds to transitioning from the first range of shear rates to the second range of shear rates, wherein the second velocity is less than the first velocity,

wherein one or more channels are positioned along a length of the chamber, the channels configured to mate with one or more extensions on the piston assembly to fix a radial alignment of the piston assembly relative to the chamber during movement.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein force applied to the cap causes the piston assembly to move with respect to the shear thickening fluid, the shear thickening fluid resisting the movement of the piston assembly depending on the force and speed with which the door engages the cap.

3 . The device of claim 2 , wherein the housing further comprises a plunger between the cap and the piston assembly, the plunger configured to move the piston assembly into the chamber in response to the door striking the cap.

4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises a bushing to guide the cap and plunger into the chamber in response to the force applied to the cap.

5 . The device of claim 4 , wherein the housing further comprises a spring within a channel of the bushing configured to provide mechanical resistance between the cap and the bushing in response to the force applied to the cap.

6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein both the rebound shim and the piston head include one or more slots.

7 . The device of claim 6 , wherein the rebound shim is configured to rotate with respect to the piston head thereby adjusting the amount of resistance experienced by the piston assembly.

8 . The device of claim 6 , wherein the piston head has a first angled portion and a second cylindrical section and the extensions extend from the second portion.

9 . The device of claim 6 , wherein the piston head has an interior region that receives a portion of the rebound shim therein.

10 . The device of claim 9 , wherein the interior region is curved and the rebound shim is curved.

11 . The device of claim 10 , wherein the rebound shim is mounted to a plug that is connected to the plunger and wherein the plunger can be rotated such that the plug and rebound shim rotate with respect to the piston head.

12 . A device for controlling the closing of a door, comprising:

a housing that is configured to be installed in a door jamb or door edge, the housing comprising:

a chamber filled at least in part with a shear thickening fluid that is configured to have a decreasing viscosity in response to a first range of shear rates and an increasing viscosity in response to a second range of shear rates, wherein the second range of shear rates are greater than the first range of shear rates;

a piston assembly connected to a cap, the piston assembly configured to exert pressure against the shear thickening fluid in response to a force applied to the cap such that motion of the door transitions from a first velocity to a second velocity when the STF correspondingly responds to transitioning from the first range of shear rates to the second range of shear rates, wherein the second velocity is less than the first velocity,

wherein one or more channels are positioned along a length of the chamber, the channels configured to mate with one or more extensions on the piston assembly to fix a radial alignment of the piston assembly relative to the chamber during movement; and

a plunger bushing having one or more crevices arranged at an interface between the plunger bushing and the housing, the one or more crevices to accept an amount of shear thickening fluid.

13 . The device of claim 12 , further comprising a plunger between the cap and the piston assembly, wherein the plunger bushing extends into the chamber and supports a spring on a narrow central extension, the narrow central extension configured to support and align the plunger and the spring during linear movement of the cap and the plunger.

14 . The device of claim 13 , wherein a surface of the narrow central extension is configured to receive the spring during compression.

15 . The device of claim 13 , wherein edges of the cap are configured to surround the narrow central extension as the spring compresses within the chamber.

16 . The device of claim 15 , wherein a surface of the plunger bushing is configured to stop the cap during compression of the spring.

17 . A device for controlling the closing of a door, comprising:

a housing that is configured to be installed in a door jamb or door edge, the housing comprising:

a chamber filled at least in part with a shear thickening fluid that is configured to have a decreasing viscosity in response to a first range of shear rates and an increasing viscosity in response to a second range of shear rates, wherein the second range of shear rates are greater than the first range of shear rates;

a piston assembly connected to a cap, the piston assembly configured to exert pressure against the shear thickening fluid in response to a force applied to the cap such that motion of the door transitions from a first velocity to a second velocity when the STF correspondingly responds to transitioning from the first range of shear rates to the second range of shear rates, wherein the second velocity is less than the first velocity,

wherein one or more channels are positioned along a length of the chamber, the channels configured to mate with one or more extensions on the piston assembly to fix a radial alignment of the piston assembly relative to the chamber during movement; and

an end portion opposite the cap that is removable from the housing and that receives the piston assembly.

18 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the piston assembly includes a piston with an angled portion configured to channel shear thickening fluid into one or more slots of the piston.

19 . The device of claim 17 , wherein the end portion includes a void with one or more angled surfaces to mate with an angled portion of the piston.

20 . A device for controlling the closing of a door, comprising:

a housing that is configured to be installed in a door jamb or door edge, the housing comprising:

a chamber filled at least in part with a shear thickening fluid that is configured to have a decreasing viscosity in response to a first range of shear rates and an increasing viscosity in response to a second range of shear rates, wherein the second range of shear rates are greater than the first range of shear rates;
