Abstract

Embodiments relate to a systems and methods for preventative irradiative dental treatment. In accordance with one embodiment, a system and method include using a radiation source to generate a radiation; using an optic disposed to accept the radiation to internally reflect he radiation at a first end; using at least one side of the optic to contact a dental hard tissue; using the optic to couple some of the radiation into the dental hard tissue; and, using a controller to control a parameter of the radiation to heat a surface of the dental hard tissue.

Claims (35)

1 . A system for preventative dental treatment comprising:

a hand piece configured to be held by a user, the hand piece comprising:

an optical tip disposed at a distal end of the hand piece and comprising:

an optical material substantially transmissive at a wavelength within a range of between 8,000 nm to 12,000 nm;

a first face of the optical tip position to receive the laser beam; and

at least a second face of the optical tip position down beam from the first face and configured to output the laser beam.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least a second face of the optical tip is non-parallel to the first face of the optical tip.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein an angle between the first face and the at least a second face is configured to selectively output the laser beam only when the at least a second face is in contact with dental tissue.

4 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a laser arrangement configured to generate the laser beam; and

a focus optic configured to converge the laser beam to a focal region.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the first face of the optical tip is located substantially coincident with the focal region.

6 . The system of claim 5 , further comprising:

A beam scanning system configured to scan the focal region over at least a portion of the first face of the optical tip.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the optical material comprises one or more of diamond, germanium, zinc sulfide, zinc selenide, barium fluoride, magnesium fluoride, calcium fluoride, and silicon.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the optical tip is configured to internally reflect the laser beam.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the optical tip further comprises a coating over the at least a second face.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the coating comprises one or more of diamond, diamond-like carbon, a metallic coating, Parylene, and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

11 . A method of preventative dental treatment comprising:

holding, by a user, a hand piece;

receiving, using an optical tip disposed at a distal end of the hand piece, a laser beam at a first face of the optical tip;

outputting, using the optical tip, the laser beam at at least a second face of the optical tip positioned down beam from the first face, wherein the optical tip comprises:

an optical material substantially transmissive at a wavelength within a range of between 8,000 nm to 12,000 nm.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least a second face of the optical tip is non-parallel to the first face of the optical tip.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein an angle between the first face and the at least a second face is configured to selectively output the laser beam only when the at least a second face is in contact with dental tissue.

14 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

generating, using a laser arrangement, the laser beam; and

converging, using a focus optic, the laser beam to a focal region.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the first face of the optical tip is located substantially coincident with the focal region.

16 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

scanning, using a beam scanning system, configured to scan the focal region over at least a portion of the first face of the optical tip.

17 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the optical material comprises one or more of diamond, germanium, zinc sulfide, zinc selenide, barium fluoride, magnesium fluoride, calcium fluoride, and silicon.

18 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising internally reflecting, using the optical tip, the laser beam.

19 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the optical tip further comprises a coating over the at least a second face.

20 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the coating comprises one or more of diamond, diamond-like carbon, a metallic coating, Parylene, and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
