Abstract

Systems and methods may use a low speed controller in addition to an economic optimizer to achieve long-term objectives without significantly disrupting or destabilizing an electrical system. Specific long-term objectives include maximizing a capacity factor incentive and regulating battery degradation, but the methods and systems herein can be extended to more long-term objectives. A low speed controller can adjust one or more parameters of a cost function based on the relation between the projected state of the electrical system and the one or more parameters to effectuate a change to the electrical system to attempt to comply with the long-term objective.

Claims (40)

1. A system, comprising:

one or more processors coupled with memory to:

determine a projected state of an electrical system using the one or more feedback variables indicative of a status of the electrical system having a long-term objective;

determine a relation between the projected state of the electrical system and one or more long-term parameters associated with the long-term objective; and

adjust, for configuration of a controller, the one or more long-term parameters based on the relation between the projected state of the electrical system and the one or more parameters to effectuate a change to the electrical system toward compliance with the long-term objective.

2. The system of claim 1 , comprising the one or more processors to:

provide, via a communication interface configured to receive the one or more feedback variables, the one or more parameters as adjusted to configure the controller.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the communication interface is configured to transmit the one or more long-term parameters to the controller.

4. The system of claim 1 , comprising the one or more processors to:

provide the one or more parameters to the controller less frequently than the controller provides one or more control values to effectuate a change to the electrical system.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the long-term objective extends over a larger period than one or more objectives of the controller.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the long-term objective comprises controlling a lifespan of a component of the electrical system.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to provide control for control of the electrical system over an upcoming time domain, and wherein the one or more parameters as adjusted are used to configure the controller during at least a portion of a plurality of upcoming time domains.

8. The system of claim 1 , the controller receives the one or more parameters as adjusted to include as long-term parameters in a cost function of the controller.

9. The system of claim 1 , comprising the one or more processors to:

simulate multiple values for the one or more parameters with a projected load for a future time period, wherein the one or more parameters are adjusted to a value of the multiple values that causes the electrical system to come closest to complying with the long-term objective.

10. A method, comprising:

determining, by one or more processors coupled with memory, a projected state of an electrical system using the one or more feedback variables indicative of a status of the electrical system having a long-term objective;

determining, by the one or more processors, a relation between the projected state of the electrical system and one or more long-term parameters associated with the long-term objective; and

adjusting, by the one or more processors for configuration of a controller, the one or more long-term parameters based on the relation between the projected state of the electrical system and the one or more parameters to effectuate a change to the electrical system toward compliance with the long-term objective.

11. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

providing, by the one or more processors via a communication interface configured to receive the one or more feedback variables, the one or more parameters as adjusted to configure the controller.

12. The method of claim 11 , comprising:

transmitting, by the communication interface, the one or more long-term parameters to the controller.

13. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

providing, by the one or more processors, the one or more parameters to the controller less frequently than the controller provides one or more control values to effectuate a change to the electrical system.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the long-term objective extends over a larger period than one or more objectives of the controller.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the long-term objective comprises controlling a lifespan of a component of the electrical system.

16. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

providing, by the controller, provide control values for control variables for control of the electrical system over an upcoming time domain, and wherein the one or more parameters as adjusted are used to configure the controller during at least a portion of a plurality of upcoming time domains.

17. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

receiving, by the controller, the one or more parameters as adjusted to include as long-term parameters in a cost function of the controller.

18. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

simulating, by the one or more processors, multiple values for the one or more parameters with a projected load for a future time period, wherein the one or more parameters are adjusted to a value of the multiple values that causes the electrical system to come closest to complying with the long-term objective.

19. A non-transitory machine readable medium storing program instructions for causing at least one processor to:

determine a projected state of an electrical system using the one or more feedback variables indicative of a status of the electrical system having a long-term objective;

determine a relation between the projected state of the electrical system and one or more long-term parameters associated with the long-term objective; and

adjust, for configuration of a controller, the one or more long-term parameters based on the relation between the projected state of the electrical system and the one or more parameters to effectuate a change to the electrical system toward compliance with the long-term objective.

20. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the program instructions cause the at least one processor to:

provide, via a communication interface configured to receive the one or more feedback variables, the one or more parameters as adjusted to configure the controller.
