Abstract

Techniques and systems are provided for identifying a video segment displayed on a screen of a remote television system, and providing an option to switch to an alternative or related version of the video program that includes the video segment. For example, video segments displayed on a screen of a television system can be identified, and contextually-targeted content or contextually-related alternative content can be provided to a television system based on the identification of a video segment. The alternative or related version of the video program can include the currently displayed program in an on-demand format that can be viewed off-line and can be started over from a beginning portion of the program.

Claims (40)

1. A system comprising:

one or more processors; and

a non-transitory machine-readable storage medium containing instructions which when executed on the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations including:

receiving pixel data from a media system, wherein the pixel data includes pixel values derived from video content, wherein the video content is being presented in a real-time broadcast by the media system, and wherein the video content includes one or more third-party video segments;

determining an identification of the video content by comparing the pixel data to reference pixel data stored in a reference database;

identifying, in response to determining the identification of the video content, contextual content for presentation by the media system during an alternative version of the video content, wherein the contextual content includes one or more alternative third-party video segments for replacing the one or more third-party video segments, and wherein the contextual content is identified based on browsing activity of a user associated with the media system; and

transmitting one or more software instructions, wherein the one or more software instructions, when received by the media system, cause a software application associated with the contextual content to execute on the media system, the software application causing the media system to switch from the real-time broadcast to the alternative version of the video content with the contextual content.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the browsing activity is based on Internet Protocol traffic of the media system.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further include:

receiving the browsing activity associated with the user of the media system from a third-party service.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the browsing activity is associated with a personal computer or mobile device.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the browsing activity is based on cookies.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

identifying the video content based on cues derived from a video frame of the video content, wherein identifying the video content causes a presentation of a prompt to request the alternative version of the video content.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the alternative version of the video content includes a version of the video content that starts at a beginning of the video content.

8. A method comprising:

receiving pixel data from a media system, wherein the pixel data includes pixel values derived from video content, wherein the video content is being presented in a real-time broadcast by the media system, and wherein the video content includes one or more third-party video segments;

determining an identification of the video content by comparing the pixel data to reference pixel data stored in a reference database;

identifying, in response to determining the identification of the video content, contextual content for presentation by the media system during an alternative version of the video content, wherein the contextual content includes one or more alternative third-party video segments for replacing the one or more third-party video segments, and wherein the contextual content is identified based on browsing activity of a user associated with the media system; and

transmitting one or more software instructions, wherein the one or more software instructions, when received by the media system, cause a software application associated with the contextual content to execute on the media system, the software application causing the media system to switch from the real-time broadcast to the alternative version of the video content with the contextual content.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the browsing activity is based on Internet Protocol traffic of the media system.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving the browsing activity associated with the user of the media system from a third-party service.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the browsing activity is associated with a personal computer or mobile device.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the browsing activity is based on cookies.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

identifying the video content based on cues derived from a video frame of the video content, wherein identifying the video content causes a presentation of a prompt to request the alternative version of the video content.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the alternative version of the video content includes a version of the video content that starts at a beginning of the video content.

15. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium containing instructions which when executed on one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations including:

receiving pixel data from a media system, wherein the pixel data includes pixel values derived from video content, wherein the video content is being presented in a real-time broadcast by the media system, and wherein the video content includes one or more third-party video segments;

determining an identification of the video content by comparing the pixel data to reference pixel data stored in a reference database;

identifying, in response to determining the identification of the video content, contextual content for presentation by the media system during an alternative version of the video content, wherein the contextual content includes one or more alternative third-party video segments for replacing the one or more third-party video segments, and wherein the contextual content is identified based on browsing activity of a user associated with the media system; and

transmitting one or more software instructions, wherein the one or more software instructions, when received by the media system, cause a software application associated with the contextual content to execute on the media system, the software application causing the media system to switch from the real-time broadcast to the alternative version of the video content with the contextual content.

16. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the browsing activity is based on Internet Protocol traffic of the media system.

17. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further include:

receiving the browsing activity associated with the user of the media system from a third-party service.

18. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the browsing activity is associated with a personal computer or mobile device.

19. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the browsing activity is based on cookies.

20. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise:

identifying the video content based on cues derived from a video frame of the video content, wherein identifying the video content causes a presentation of a prompt to request the alternative version of the video content.
