Abstract

A power converter and a method of operation thereof is disclosed including an input, an output, a sensor unit, a switched power converter, and a processor module. The power converter may convert an input power into an output power. The power converter may sense real-time measurements of the input power and the output power to determine a real-time calculated efficiency. The power converter may chop the input power into sized and positioned portions of the input power based on a plurality of determined operating parameters. The power converter may determine the operating parameters based on the real-time calculated efficiency and on a plurality of other operating factors/conditions.

Claims (49)

1. A power converter comprising:

an alternating current (AC) rectifier configured to:

receive an AC input electrical signal; and

output a rectified AC electrical signal based on the AC input electrical signal and a first control signal;

an AC-direct current (DC) converter coupled to the AC rectifier, the AC-DC converter configured to:

receive the rectified AC electrical signal; and

output a first DC electrical signal based on the rectified AC electrical signal and a second control signal;

a DC-DC converter coupled to the AC-DC converter and to a load, the DC-DC converter configured to:

receive the the first DC electrical signal; and

output, at a power converter output, a second DC electrical signal based on the first DC electrical signal and a third control signal; and

a digital controller coupled to the power converter output and further coupled to at least one of the AC rectifier, the AC-DC converter, or the DC-DC converter, wherein the digital controller is configured to:

sense the second DC electrical signal; and

output one or more control signals that adjust a value of the first control signal, the second control signal, or the third control signal based on the second DC electrical signal.

2. The power converter of claim 1 , wherein the digital controller is further configured to output one or more control signals that adjust a value the first control signal, a value of the second control signal, and a value of the third control signal.

3. The power converter of claim 1 , further comprising an AC polarity sensor configured to sense a polarity of the AC input electrical signal and send an indication of the polarity to the digital controller.

4. The power converter of claim 1 , further comprising a power factor correction (PFC) controller coupled to the AC-DC converter and coupled to the digital controller.

5. The power converter of claim 4 , wherein the PFC controller is configured to:

sense the first DC electrical signal; and

output the second control signal, wherein the second control signal is based on a PFC control signal of the one or more control signals from the digital controller.

6. The power converter of claim 5 , wherein:

the PFC controller is further configured to output a PFC signal to the digital controller; and

the digital controller is further configured to output the PFC control signal of the one or more control signals based on the PFC signal.

7. The power converter of claim 1 , further comprising a DC-DC controller coupled to the DC-DC converter and coupled to the digital controller.

8. The power converter of claim 7 , wherein the DC-DC controller is configured to:

sense the power converter output; and

output the third control signal, wherein the third control signal is based on a DC-DC control signal of the one or more control signals from the digital controller.

9. The power converter of claim 8 , wherein:

the DC-DC controller is further configured to output a DC-DC signal to the digital controller; and

the digital controller is further configured to output the DC-DC control signal of the one or more control signals based on the DC-DC signal.

a digital controller configured to:

sense a first direct current (DC) electrical signal generated by an alternating current (AC)-DC converter and sense a second DC electrical signal generated by a DC-DC converter; and

output a first control signal to control operation of an AC rectifier, a second control signal to control operation of the AC-DC converter, and a third control signal as an input to a DC-DC controller based on the first DC electrical signal and the second DC electrical signal; and

the DC-DC controller coupled to the DC-DC converter and coupled to the digital controller, wherein the DC-DC controller is configured to:

output a DC-DC control signal, wherein the DC-DC control signal is based on the third control signal.

12. The controller subsystem of claim 11 , further comprising an AC polarity sensor configured to sense a polarity of an AC input electrical signal at an input of the AC rectifier and send an indication of the polarity to the digital controller.

13. The controller subsystem of claim 11 , further comprising a power factor correction (PFC) controller coupled to the AC-DC converter and coupled to the digital controller.

14. The controller subsystem of claim 13 , wherein the PFC controller is configured to:

sense the first DC electrical signal; and

output a PFC control signal, wherein the PFC control signal is based on second control signal.

15. The controller subsystem of claim 14 , wherein:

the PFC controller is further configured to output a PFC signal to the digital controller; and
