Abstract

Examples of invasive biosensor alignment and retention features and methods are described. One example biosensor includes a housing comprising: a first surface defining a first opening, and a second surface opposite the first surface, the second surface defining a second opening, the first and second openings defining a substantially unobstructed pathway through the housing; a biosensor wire partially disposed within the housing and having an exterior portion extending through the first opening; a hollow insertion needle positioned within the pathway and extending through the first opening, the hollow insertion needle at least partially encircling the biosensor wire; and a biosensor retention feature collapsible against the first surface of the housing, the biosensor retention feature encircling and contacting the hollow insertion needle.

Claims (40)

1 . A method comprising:

providing a housing comprising:

a first surface defining a first opening, the first surface configured to be coupled to a skin of a wearer, and

a second surface opposite the first surface, the second surface defining a second opening, the first and second openings defining a pathway through the housing;

providing a first portion of a biosensor extending through the first opening;

providing an insertion needle extending through the pathway from the second opening and through the first opening, the insertion needle at least partially encircling the first portion of the biosensor;

providing a biosensor retention feature, the biosensor retention feature configured to retain the biosensor within the insertion needle when the housing is dropped.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the biosensor retention feature comprises a pad, an inner ring member, an outer ring member, and at least one flexible leg member coupling the inner ring member to the outer ring member.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the biosensor retention feature comprises a disk defining a hole.

4 . The method of claim 3 , further comprising sliding the disk onto and into contact with the insertion needle.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the biosensor retention feature comprises a stopper-shaped member defining a hole extending through the stopper-shaped member.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming a hole in the biosensor retention feature by pressing a tip of the insertion needle through the biosensor retention feature.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the biosensor retention feature comprises a patch and a spiral-shaped member.

8 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising applying the biosensor retention feature to the insertion needle, the applying comprising:

sliding the inner ring member onto and into contact with the insertion needle, and

affixing the outer ring member to the pad, and affixing the pad to the first surface of the housing.

9 . The method of claim 2 , wherein each of the flexible leg members attach to the inner ring member at a respective first contact point and the outer ring member at a respective second contact point.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the respective first and second contact points for at least one flexible leg member are offset from each other.

11 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising leaving an air gap between the disk and the first surface of the housing.

12 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising applying the biosensor retention feature to the insertion needle, the applying comprising:

affixing the patch to the first surface of the housing;

encircling the insertion needle with the spiral-shaped member; and

extending the spiral-shaped member along the length of the insertion needle and away from the patch.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a pad is affixed to the first surface of the housing, the biosensor retention feature coupled to the pad.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a pad is affixed to the first surface of the housing, the pad defining a cutout portion corresponding to the biosensor retention feature, the biosensor retention feature configured to collapse into the cutout portion defined by the pad.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the biosensor retention feature comprises a flexible material.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the flexible material comprises a polyurethane material or a silicone material.

17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the retention feature is positioned along the length of the insertion needle by a tight fit of the insertion needle through the retention feature.

18 . A method comprising:

obtaining a wearable biosensor comprising:

a housing comprising a first surface defining a first opening, and a second surface opposite the first surface, the second surface defining a second opening, the first and second openings defining a pathway through the housing, the first surface configured to be coupled to a skin of a wearer;

a biosensor having an exterior portion extending through the first opening;

an insertion needle positioned within the pathway and extending through the first opening, the insertion needle at least partially encircling the biosensor; and

a biosensor retention feature configured to retain the biosensor within the insertion needle when the housing is dropped;

applying the wearable biosensor to a wearer's skin comprising:

inserting the insertion needle into the wearer's skin through a puncture, and

inserting the biosensor through the puncture; and

withdrawing the insertion needle from the wearer's skin.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the biosensor retention feature comprises a patch, an inner ring member, an outer ring member, and at least one flexible leg member coupling the inner ring member to the outer ring member.

20 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the biosensor retention feature comprises a disk defining a hole, the insertion needle and biosensor extending through the hole in the disk, the disk spaced apart from the first surface of the housing.
