Abstract

Methods, systems, and apparatus for monitoring and controlling electronic devices using wired and wireless protocols are disclosed. The systems and apparatus may monitor their environment for signals from electronic devices. The systems and apparatus may take and disambiguate the signals that are received from the devices in their environment to identify the devices and associate control signals with the devices. The systems and apparatus may use communication means to send control signals to the identified electronic devices. Multiple apparatuses or systems may be connected together into networks, including mesh networks, to make for a more robust architecture.

Claims (48)

1. A mesh network comprising a plurality of interconnected communication apparatuses, each communication apparatus comprising:

at least one processor;

a memory coupled to the at least one processor;

a communication port coupled to the at least one processor;

the communication port providing communication between the apparatus and at least one electronic device;

the communication port also providing communication between the communication apparatus and other ones of the communication apparatuses in the mesh network; and

wherein each communication apparatus is capable of identifying other communication apparatuses to which it is connected in the mesh network and wherein each communication apparatus is configured to:

record signal noise from the at least one electronic device connected to the communication apparatus, wherein the recorded signal noise includes a waveform associated with the at least one electronic device;

transmit the recorded signal noise to a remote device;

receive, from the remote device, an identification of a unique device waveform in the recorded signal noise; and

facilitate identification of the at least one of the electronic device based on comparing the identification of the unique device waveform to an entry in a database.

2. The mesh network of claim 1 wherein each communication apparatus further comprises a GPS module.

3. The mesh network of claim 1 wherein each communication apparatus further comprises a RFID module.

4. The mesh network of claim 3 wherein the RFID module is configured to establish a beacon for monitoring a space around the communication apparatus for any RFID transmitters.

5. The mesh network of claim 1 wherein the communication port comprises a Bluetooth radio and the Bluetooth radio is configured to continuously ping area space around the apparatus for any nearby Bluetooth enabled devices.

6. The mesh network of claim 1 wherein the communication port comprises a powerline communication (PCL) bridge and each communication apparatus further comprises a control clamp configured to splice into a power line.

7. The mesh network of claim 1 wherein each communication apparatus is further configured to:

associate a command signal with the at least one electronic device.

8. The mesh network of claim 7 wherein each communication apparatus is further configured to:

generate a command signal for the at least one electronic device; and

control the at least one electronic device using the command signal.

9. The mesh network of claim 1 wherein the communication port of each communication apparatus comprising at least one of a Wi-Fi radio, an Ethernet port, a power line communication (PLC) bridge, a ZigBee radio, and a Bluetooth radio.

10. The mesh network of claim 1 wherein each communication apparatus is further configured to:

receive a communication signal, wherein the communication signal comprises device signal information, signal noise, a conflated device signal, or a combination thereof generated by a plurality of electronic devices to which it is connected;

individually identify at least one of the plurality of electronic devices by comparing the communication signal to predetermined device waveforms associated with known electronic devices, and identifying at least one portion of the communication signal that corresponds to at least one of the predetermined device waveforms;

establish a communication link with the at least one identified electronic device; and

transmit a control signal for controlling the at least one identified electronic device.

11. The mesh network of claim 10 wherein each communication apparatus is further configured to:

associate a device control pathway with the at least one identified electronic device.

12. The mesh network of claim 10 wherein each communication apparatus is further configured to:

generate the control signal for controlling the at least one identified electronic device.

13. The mesh network of claim 12 wherein each communication apparatus is further configured to:

ping all inputs available to the communication apparatus.

14. The mesh network of claim 13 wherein each communication apparatus is further configured to:

generate a digital impression based on the communication signal.

15. The mesh network of claim 14 wherein each communication apparatus is further configured to:

determine whether the at least one identified electronic device has been identified based on the digital impression.

16. The mesh network of claim 15 wherein the identifying further comprises transmitting the digital impression to a remote server if the electronic device has not been identified based on the digital impression; and

receiving an identification of the electronic device from the remote server.

17. The mesh network of claim 1 wherein each communication apparatus is further configured to:

ping an available input of the communication apparatus to the network;

identify, in response to the pinging, other communication apparatuses in the network;

identify a one of a communication apparatuses in the network having a strongest signal strength to at least one of the electronic devices; and

route, to the at least one electronic device, data from a set of communication apparatuses intended for the at least one electronic device through the communication apparatus having the strongest signal strength to the electronic device.

18. The mesh network of claim 17 , wherein each communication apparatus is further configured to:

determine whether a communication apparatus with a weaker signal strength than the communication apparatus having the strongest signal strength is able to detect the communication apparatus having the strongest signal strength.

19. The mesh network of claim 18 , wherein each communication apparatus is further configured to:

route, if the communication apparatus with the weaker signal strength is unable to detect the communication apparatus having the strongest signal strength, data associated with the communication apparatus with the weaker signal strength via an intermediary communication apparatus and then to the communication apparatus with the strongest signal strength.
