Abstract

A process for reducing pressure in a well for well kill, during and after recovery of hydrocarbons from a formation. A mobilizing fluid is injected through the well and into the formation to mobilize the hydrocarbons and increase the well pressure, followed by emulsion fluids production to surface while mobilizing fluid injection is discontinued, which decreases the well pressure in preparation for well kill. The emulsion fluids are directed to a produced emulsion line at a first pressure, with at least some of the emulsion fluids instead redirected to an additional line at a lower second pressure as well pressure decreases, and these fluids from the additional line are then pumped at a third pressure higher than the second pressure into the produced emulsion line.

Claims (7)

1. A process for reducing pressure in a well for well kill, the well disposed in a formation containing hydrocarbons, after injecting a mobilizing fluid through the well to mobilize a portion of the hydrocarbons and increase the pressure in the well, the process comprising:

producing emulsion fluids comprising the portion of the hydrocarbons from the formation through the well to surface, thus decreasing the pressure in the well, and directing the emulsion fluids into a produced emulsion line at the surface operating at a first pressure;

discontinuing the injecting of the mobilizing fluid into the well while continuing the producing of the emulsion fluids at a reduced pressure to the surface, and redirecting at least a portion of the emulsion fluids produced to the surface at the reduced pressure to an additional line at the surface instead of to the produced emulsion line, the additional line operating at a second pressure lower than the first pressure, as pressure in the well decreases to bleed off the well; and

pumping the at least a portion of the emulsion fluids from the additional line at a third pressure higher than the second pressure into the produced emulsion line coupled to a facility for separation of the portion of the hydrocarbons from the emulsion fluids.

2. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the discontinuing of the injecting of the mobilizing fluid begins after a start-up phase of operation.

3. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the additional line comprises a test line and redirecting the at least a portion of the emulsion fluids to the additional line comprises redirecting the at least a portion of the emulsion fluids to the test line as the pressure in the well decreases.

4. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the produced emulsion line is coupled to a plurality of wells, including the well, for receiving the emulsion fluids from the plurality of wells.
