Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for drying electronic devices are disclosed. An exemplary method comprises: placing a portable electronic device into a drying chamber; providing a first air channel, wherein the first air channel connects the drying chamber, a pressure-generating device, and a moisture-reducing device; generating a first air flow through the first air channel using the pressure-generating device; removing a first moisture from an interior of the portable electronic device to an exterior of the portable electronic device; detecting moisture removed from the portable electronic device; pausing the generating the first air flow through the first air channel based on the amount of moisture; providing a second air channel, wherein the second air channel connects the moisture-reducing device, the pressure-generating device, a valve, and an evacuation channel; generating a second air flow through the second air channel using the pressure-generating device; and removing a second moisture from the moisture-reducing device.

Claims (43)

1. A method, comprising:

generating a first air flow, using a pressure-generating device, through a first air channel connecting a drying chamber, the pressure-generating device, and a moisture-reducing device, wherein the drying chamber receives a portable electronic device rendered at least partially inoperable due to moisture intrusion into an interior of the portable electronic device;

removing a first moisture from the interior of the portable electronic device to an exterior of the portable electronic device or to the moisture-reducing device;

determining the first moisture removed from the interior of the portable electronic device to the exterior of the portable electronic device or to the moisture-reducing device;

pausing the generating the first air flow through the first air channel based on the first moisture removed from the interior of the portable electronic device to the exterior of the portable electronic device or to the moisture-reducing device; and

generating a second air flow, using the pressure-generating device, after the drying chamber is disconnected from the pressure-generating device and the moisture-reducing device, through a second air channel connecting the moisture-reducing device, the pressure-generating device, a valve, and an evacuation channel, wherein the second air flow removes the first moisture or a second moisture from the moisture-reducing device through the evacuation channel.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

measuring a humidity in the drying chamber; and

pausing the generating the first air flow through the first air channel after the humidity decreases.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

measuring a humidity in the drying chamber, wherein the generating the first air flow through the first air channel begins after the humidity increases.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

measuring a first humidity and a second humidity in the drying chamber, wherein the generating the first air flow through the first air channel is paused after a difference between the first humidity and the second humidity is less than or equal to a first tolerance.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising,

measuring a humidity in the drying chamber, wherein the generating the first air flow through the first air channel is paused based on the humidity in the drying chamber reaching a first value.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

regenerating the moisture-reducing device, wherein the regenerating comprises heating the moisture-reducing device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating the first air flow through the first air channel further comprises generating the first air flow using a fan.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the removing the first moisture from the portable electronic device to the moisture-reducing device occurs prior to the first air flow completing one cycle within the first air channel.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the moisture-reducing device further comprises a desiccant.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising removing a third moisture from the desiccant.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

isolating the desiccant from the drying chamber prior to removing the third moisture from the desiccant.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising heating the desiccant.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the heating the desiccant comprises heating the desiccant to at least 200 deg. F. (93.3° C.) and less than or equal to 300 deg. F. (148.9° C.).

14. An apparatus, comprising:

a drying chamber comprising an interior, wherein the interior is configured for placement and removal of an electronic device;

a first air channel, wherein the first air channel connects the drying chamber, a pressure-generating device, and a moisture-reducing device;

a second air channel, wherein the second air channel connects the moisture-reducing device, the pressure-generating device, a valve, and an evacuation channel;

at least one controller connected to the pressure-generating device and to the moisture-reducing device, the at least one controller being configured to:

control the pressure-generating device to generate a first air flow through the first air channel,

operate the moisture-reducing device to remove moisture from the drying chamber,

control the pressure-generating device to generate the first air flow through the first air channel, and

control the pressure-generating device to generate a second air flow through the second air channel;

a moisture-based sensor; and

a computing device connected to the moisture-based sensor,

wherein the computing device is configured to determine at least one of a first moisture removed from the electronic device or a second moisture remaining in the drying chamber and provide instructions to the at least one controller to modify the generating of the first air flow through the first air channel based on the first moisture or the second moisture.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to control the pressure-generating device to pause the generating the first air flow through the first air channel based on a rate at which the second moisture remaining in the drying chamber changes.

16. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the moisture-based sensor determines a humidity in the drying chamber, and the at least one controller is configured to determine whether the electronic device is at least partially dry based on a difference between a first humidity determined in the drying chamber and a second humidity determined in the drying chamber.

17. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to control the moisture-reducing device to maintain a first humidity in the first air flow based on at least one of the first moisture or the second moisture.

18. The apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising a heater, wherein the heater is connected to and provides heat to the moisture-reducing device at least when the second air flow is generated through the second air channel.

19. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the pressure-generating device is a fan, and the moisture-reducing device comprises a desiccant.

20. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein a valve provides the first air channel and the second air channel, wherein the valve is configured to into a first position to provide the first air channel and into a second position to provide the second air channel.
