Intermaxillary fixation device and method of using same
View Patent ↗A medical apparatus including a bar with a first attachment loop, a second attachment and a plurality of hooks, wherein the medical apparatus is an arch bar.
1. A surgical method comprising the steps of:
contouring a first plate to match a mandible contour;
directly affixing the first plate to the mandible by inserting a first fastener through a first hole extending through the first plate and into the mandible;
contouring a second plate to match a maxilla contour;
directly affixing the second plate to the maxilla by inserting a second fastener through a second hole extending through the second plate and into the maxilla; and
attaching the first plate to the second plate to restrict movement of the mandible with respect to the maxilla.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second fasteners are screws.
3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of repositioning the first hole and repositioning the second hole.
4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the repositioning steps include bending a first stem connecting the first hole to the first plate and bend a second stem connecting the second hole to the second plate.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the affixing steps further include:
inserting a third fastener through a third hole extending through the first plate and into the mandible;
and
inserting a fourth fastener through a fourth hole extending through the second plate and into the maxilla; and
the attaching step includes attaching a first wire to the first plate and the second plate, the wire preventing movement of the mandible away from the maxilla.
6. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the contouring steps include the steps of bending the first plate to the contour of the mandible and bending the second plate to the contour of the maxilla.
7. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the attaching step includes attaching a first wire to a first hook monolithically formed with the first plate and a second hook monolithically formed with the second plate.
8. The surgical method of claim 7 , further comprising the step of attaching a second wire to a third hook monolithically formed with the first plate and a fourth hook monolithically formed with the second plate.
9. The surgical method of claim 8 , wherein the first and second wires cross each other.
10. A method comprising the steps of:
directly affixing a first plate to a mandible;
directly affixing a second plate to a maxilla; and
attaching a first wire to a first hook monolithically formed with the first plate and a second hook monolithically formed with the second plate to restrict movement of the mandible with respect to the maxilla.
11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the affixing steps include placing a first fastener through a first hole and placing a second fastener through a second hole.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first and second fasteners are screws.
13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising the steps of repositioning the first hole and repositioning the second hole.
14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the repositioning steps include bending a first stem connecting the first hole to the first plate and bend a second stem connecting the second hole to the second plate.
15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the affixing steps include:
inserting a first screw through a first hole extending through the first plate and into the mandible;
inserting a second screw through a second hole extending through the first plate and into the mandible;
inserting a third screw through a third hole extending through the second plate and into the maxilla; and
inserting a fourth screw through a fourth hole extending through the second plate and into the maxilla; and
the attaching step includes attaching a first wire to the first plate and the second plate, the wire preventing movement of the mandible away from the maxilla.
16. The surgical method of claim 10 , further comprising the steps of bending the first plate to the contour of the mandible and bending the second plate to the contour of the maxilla.
17. The surgical method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of attaching a second wire to a third hook monolithically formed with the first plate and a fourth hook monolithically formed with the second plate.
18. The surgical method of claim 17 , wherein the first and second wires cross each other.
