Abstract

A surgical stapling instrument having an elongate shaft assembly, an articulation joint, and an end effector pivotally coupled to the elongate shaft assembly about the articulation joint is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw pivotally coupled to the first jaw. A replaceable staple cartridge assembly comprises a cartridge body having a deck with a first tissue-facing surface comprising a plurality of staple cavities defined therein and a second tissue-facing surface stepped relative to the first tissue-facing surface. The replaceable staple cartridge further comprises a sled with a cutting surface. The end effector further comprises a drive screw extending longitudinally therewithin and a bearing, wherein a distal end of the drive screw is received by the bearing.

Claims (72)

1. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

an elongate shaft;

an articulation joint;

an end effector pivotally coupled to said elongate shaft at said articulation joint, wherein said end effector comprises:

a channel; and

an anvil pivotally coupled to said channel, wherein said anvil is movable relative to said channel between an open position and a closed position;

a staple cartridge replaceably seated in said channel, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck, comprising:

a first anvil-facing surface comprising a plurality of staple cavities defined therein; and

a second anvil-facing surface stepped relative to said first anvil-facing surface;

a plurality of staples movably positioned in said plurality of staple cavities;

a sled assembly, comprising:

a plurality of distal-facing camming ramps; and

a knife; and

a pan attached to said cartridge body, wherein said pan comprises:

a first lateral sidewall comprising a first plurality of windows;

a second lateral sidewall comprising a second plurality of windows; and

a base extending between said first lateral sidewall and said second lateral sidewall, wherein said base comprises a pan slot defined therein;

a drive screw extending longitudinally within said channel, wherein said drive screw comprises a distal end; and

a bearing, wherein said distal end of said drive screw is received by said bearing, wherein said bearing permits said drive screw to freely rotate with respect to said channel, and wherein a rotation of said drive screw in a first direction causes said sled assembly to translate distally through said channel.

2. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 1 , wherein said drive screw is motor-driven.

3. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 2 , wherein said knife comprises a distal-facing cutting edge.

4. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 3 , wherein said cartridge body further comprises an elongate slot defined therein, and wherein said sled assembly translates distally through said elongate slot during a staple firing stroke.

5. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 4 , wherein said elongate slot is aligned with said pan slot.

6. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 5 , wherein said drive screw comprises a helical thread.

7. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 6 , wherein a portion of said sled assembly is threadably connected to said helical thread of said drive screw.

8. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 7 , wherein said drive screw extends proximally from said bearing.

9. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 8 , wherein said drive screw projects proximally from said cartridge body.

10. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

an elongate shaft;

an articulation joint;

an end effector pivotally coupled to said elongate shaft at said articulation joint, wherein said end effector comprises:

a channel; and

an anvil pivotally coupled to said channel, wherein said anvil is movable relative to said channel between an open position and a closed position;

a staple cartridge replaceably seated in said channel, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck, comprising:

a first anvil-facing surface comprising a plurality of staple cavities defined therein; and

a second anvil-facing surface stepped relative to said first anvil-facing surface;

a plurality of staples movably positioned in said plurality of staple cavities;

a wedge sled assembly comprising a distal-facing knife; and

a pan attached to said cartridge body, wherein said pan comprises:

a first lateral sidewall comprising a first through hole defined therein;

a second lateral sidewall comprising a second through hole defined therein; and

a base extending between said first lateral sidewall and said second lateral sidewall, wherein said base comprises a pan slot defined therein;

a drive screw extending longitudinally within said channel; and

a bearing, wherein a distal portion of said drive screw is received by said bearing, wherein said bearing permits said drive screw to freely rotate with respect to said channel.

11. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 10 , wherein a portion of said wedge sled assembly is threaded onto said drive screw.

12. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 11 , wherein a rotation of said drive screw in a first direction causes said wedge sled assembly to translate distally through said channel.

13. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 12 , wherein said drive screw projects proximally from said cartridge body when said cartridge body is seated in said channel.

14. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

an elongate shaft assembly;

an articulation joint;

an end effector pivotally coupled to said elongate shaft assembly about said articulation joint, wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw pivotally coupled to said first jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position;

a replaceable staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck, comprising:

a first tissue-facing surface comprising a plurality of staple cavities defined therein; and

a second tissue-facing surface stepped relative to said first tissue-facing surface;

a plurality of staples movably positioned in said plurality of staple cavities; and

a sled comprising a cutting surface;

a drive screw extending longitudinally within said end effector, wherein a rotation of said drive screw in a first direction causes said sled to translate distally through a staple firing stroke; and

a bearing, wherein a distal end of said drive screw is received by said bearing, wherein said drive screw extends proximally from said bearing and projects proximally from said cartridge body, and wherein said bearing permits said drive screw to freely rotate with respect to said end effector.

15. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 14 , further comprising a tray fixed to said cartridge body.

16. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 15 , wherein said tray comprises a first lateral sidewall comprising a window defined therein, a second lateral sidewall, and a base extending between said first lateral sidewall and said second lateral sidewall.

17. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 16 , wherein said first jaw comprises a channel, and wherein said second jaw comprises an anvil.

18. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 17 , wherein a portion of said sled is threadably engaged with said drive screw.

19. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 18 , wherein said cutting surface comprises a knife edge.

20. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 19 , wherein said drive screw is motor-driven.
