Abstract

The invention relates to a binder composition for the cold forming of metal ore pellets, wherein the binder composition comprises a hydraulic binder component and additives, wherein the hydraulic binder component has a fineness of at least D95<40 μm, D50<12 μm, D10<5 μm (determined by laser diffraction particle size analyzer) with a Blaine fineness between 6500 and 9000 cm 2 /g wherein the CaO content is >62.5 wt.-% and the content of C3S is >60 wt.-%, preferably >65 wt.-%.

Claims (33)

1 - 15 . (canceled)

16 . A binder composition for the cold forming of metal ore pellets, wherein the binder composition comprises a hydraulic binder component and additives, wherein the hydraulic binder component has (a) a fineness of at least D95<40 μm, D50<12 μm, D10<5 μm (determined by laser diffraction particle size analyzer) and (b) a Blaine fineness between 6500 and 9000 cm 2 /g wherein (c) a CaO content of >62.5 wt.-% and (d) a content of C3S is >60 wt.-%

17 . The binder composition of claim 16 , wherein the hydraulic binder component comprises at least one of (a) alkanolamines in an amount of 0.1 wt.-% to 1 wt-% and (b) gypsum an amount of 0.5 wt.-% to 10 wt.-% based on the weight of the total hydraulic binder component.

18 . The binder composition of claim 17 , wherein the hydraulic binder further comprises Al 2 O 3 >4 wt.-%; Fe 2 O 3 <3 wt.-%; SO 3 >3.5 wt.-%; C3A>2 wt.-% (by XRD-Rietveld analysis); and C4AF<11% wt.-% (by XRD-Rietveld analysis).

19 . The binder composition of claim 16 , further comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of alkanolamines, calcium aluminate cement, iron sulfate, calcium chloride, magnesium chlorides, sodium sulfoaluminates, CSH seeds, carboxymethyl cellulose, carboxymethylhydroxyethyl cellulose, vinyl copolymers, sodium citrate, sodium gluconate, disodium salt of ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid, melamine-formaldehyde condensates, naphthalene-formaldehyde condensates, lignosulfonates, set retardants, superplasticizers and fluxes.

20 . The binder composition of claim 16 , wherein the hydraulic binder component comprises 2 wt.-% to 20 wt.-% of aluminate cement.

21 . The binder composition of claim 16 , wherein the binder composition further comprises a flux, selected from the group consisting of ground limestone and dolomite.

22 . A method for the production of metal ore pellets comprising mixing finely ground ore or an ore concentrate with a binder composition of claim 16 / 1 any of the preceding claims; and pelletizing the mixture.

23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the binder composition is present in an amount of 2 wt.-% to 12 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the dry pellet.

24 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the ore has a water content of 3 wt. % to 15 wt.-%, based on the weight the ore before mixing.

25 . The method of claim 22 , further comprising adding a carbon source before or during pelletizing.

26 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising adding a carbon source before or during pelletizing.

27 . The method of claim 24 , further comprising adding a carbon source before or during pelletizing.

28 . The method of claim 22 , wherein pelletizing the mixture includes at least one selected from the group consisting of:

(a) spreading the binder composition as a powder or an aqueous slurry onto iron ore or ore concentrate, or

(b) sending the mixture to an agglomeration device or

(c) injecting the mixture to a pelletizing disc.

29 . The method of claim 23 , wherein pelletizing the mixture includes at least one selected from the group consisting of

(a) spreading the binder composition as a powder or an aqueous slurry onto iron ore or ore concentrate, or

(b) sending the mixture to an agglomeration device or

(c) injecting the mixture to a pelletizing disc.

30 . The method of claim 24 , wherein pelletizing the mixture includes at least one selected from the group consisting of

(a) spreading the binder composition as a powder or an aqueous slurry onto iron ore or ore concentrate, or

(b) sending the mixture to an agglomeration device or

(c) injecting the mixture to a pelletizing disc.

31 . The method of claim 25 , wherein pelletizing the mixture includes at least one selected from the group consisting of

(a) spreading the binder composition as a powder or an aqueous slurry onto iron ore or ore concentrate, or

(b) sending the mixture to an agglomeration device or

(c) injecting the mixture to a pelletizing disc.

32 . The method of claim 22 , further comprising curing the pellets at a temperature above 5° C. in an atmosphere having a relative humidity above 90%, for 2 to 7 days after pelletizing.

33 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising curing the pellets at a temperature above 5° C. in an atmosphere having a relative humidity above 90%, for 2 to 7 days after pelletizing.

34 . A metal ore pellet produced according to the method of claim 22 .

35 . A metal ore pellet produced according to the method of claim 27 .
