Abstract

A system of shields designed to provide substantially greater protection, head to toe, against radiation exposure to health care workers in a hospital room during procedures which require real-time imaging. The shields are placed around the patient and the x-ray table and provide protection even when the x-ray tube is moved to various angles around the patient.

Claims (42)

1. A radiation shielding system, comprising:

a first radiation shield configured to be positioned along a side of a patient; and

a second radiation shield configured to be positioned transversely over a patient; and,

wherein at least one of the first radiation shield and the second radiation shield is independently adjustable between a first position and a second position.

2. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the first position is a vertical position.

3. The radiation shielding system of claim 2 , wherein the first radiation shield is perpendicular to the second radiation shield when both the first radiation shield and the second radiation shield are in the first position.

4. The radiation shielding system of claim 2 , wherein the second position is a non-vertical position.

5. The radiation shielding system of claim 2 , wherein the first radiation shield is biased towards the first position.

6. The radiation shielding system of claim 2 , wherein the second radiation shield is biased towards the first position.

7. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the first radiation shield is vertically adjustable.

8. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the second radiation shield is height adjustable.

9. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein both the first radiation shield and the second radiation shield are each independently adjustable between the first position and the second position.

10. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the second radiation shield is adjustable about a vertical axis.

11. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the second radiation shield is adjustable about a horizontal axis.

12. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the first radiation shield is adjustable about a horizontal axis.

13. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the second radiation shield is attached to a free-standing mechanism.

14. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein both the first radiation shield and the second radiation shield are attached to a patient platform.

15. The radiation shielding system of claim 14 , wherein the patient platform is comprised of a table or bed.

16. The radiation shielding system of claim 14 , wherein at least a portion of a lower edge of the second radiation shield is elevated with respect to an upper surface of the patient platform.

17. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the second radiation shield includes one or more bottom curves for contouring to a body of the patient.

18. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the second radiation shield includes an upper unit and a lower unit, the upper unit being adjustable with respect to the lower unit.

19. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein a bottom edge of the second radiation shield is positioned at a greater height than a bottom edge of the first radiation shield.

20. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the second radiation shield is vertically adjustable with respect to the first radiation shield.

21. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein a bottom edge of the first radiation shield is positioned at a height equal to or greater than an upper surface of a patient platform.

22. The radiation shielding system of claim 21 , wherein a bottom edge of the second radiation shield is positioned at a height equal to or greater than an upper surface of a patient platform.

23. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the first radiation shield is attached to a patient platform.

24. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the second radiation shield is attached to a patient platform.

25. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the second radiation shield is attached to a ceiling mount.

26. The radiation shielding system of claim 1 , wherein the second radiation shield is attached to a wall mount.

27. A method of shielding from radiation, comprising:

positioning a first radiation shield alongside a patient;

positioning a second radiation shield transversely over the patient;

wherein the first radiation shield is perpendicular to the second radiation shield;

adjusting the first radiation shield between a first position and a second position; and

adjusting the second radiation shield between a third position and a fourth position.

28. The method of claim 27 , wherein the first position is a vertical position and wherein the second position is a non-vertical position.

29. The method of claim 28 , wherein the third position is a vertical position and wherein the fourth position is a non-vertical position.

30. The method of claim 27 , wherein a bottom edge of the second radiation shield is positioned at a greater height than a bottom edge of the first radiation shield.

31. The method of claim 27 , further comprising adjusting a height of the second radiation shield with respect to the first radiation shield.

32. The method of claim 27 , wherein the second radiation shield is attached to a ceiling mount.

33. The method of claim 27 , wherein a bottom edge of the first radiation shield is positioned at a height equal to or greater than an upper surface of a patient platform.

34. The method of claim 33 , wherein a bottom edge of the second radiation shield is positioned at a height equal to or greater than an upper surface of a patient platform.
