Abstract

A utility-scale photovoltaic array composed of ground modules that have a contact region resting on the ground or a structure, with a three-dimensional region between the contact surface and the ground. The array includes connector systems between some modules that limit module movement, and the ground supports greater than 800 adjacent or conterminous modules that are flexibly joined in two dimensions. The array is capable of withstanding winds with speeds of greater than 150 mph (240 kph) and does not contain wind abatement stowing functionality or wind abatement extreme dampening functionality. The maximum height difference between adjacent modules is less than 4 inches, and the array comprises more than 10 rows and more than 10 columns of modules.

Claims (46)

1 . A photovoltaic array comprising ground modules that have a contact region that rests

on the ground or

on a structure such that a region directly under the contact region does not contain free air,

wherein the array is utility scale.

2 . The array of claim 1 , wherein

the contact region rests on the structure at a contact surface,

the contact surface sits directly above a three-dimensional region between the contact surface and the ground,

a perimeter of the contact surface defines vertical walls of the three-dimensional region,

and

the three-dimensional region only contains material from the structure or air from a region bordered by the structure on two sides.

3 . The array of claim 1 , wherein

the contact region rests on the structure at a contact surface, and

the structure contains a path with a starting point on the contact surface and ending in the structure at ground level directly beneath the starting point.

4 . The array of claim 3 , wherein the ground is smoothed or flattened enough that a height difference between corners of adjacent modules is small enough that a fully autonomous cleaning robot can move from one module onto another.

5 . The array of claim 3 , wherein the ground supports the modules and controls where a face of the module points.

6 . The array of claim 5 comprising connector systems between some modules.

7 . The array of claim 6 , wherein the connector systems limit z-axis module movement.

8 . The array of claim 7 , wherein the maximum height difference between adjacent modules is less than 2 inches.

9 . The array of claim 8 , wherein the maximum height difference between adjacent modules is less than 4 inches.

10 . The array of claim 9 , wherein the connector systems further join the modules into an adjacent arrangement that comprises more than one row of modules.

11 . The array of claim 10 , wherein the connector systems join adjacent modules at module edges or edge frames.

12 . The array of claim 11 , wherein the ground supports greater than 800 adjacent modules.

13 . The array of claim 11 , wherein the ground supports greater than 800 conterminous modules.

14 . The array of claim 13 , wherein the modules are flexibly joined in two dimensions.

15 . The array of claim 14 , wherein some connectors are disposed between 2-4 modules.

16 . The array of claim 15 having an arrangement that withstands wind with speeds of greater than 150 mph (240 kph).

17 . The array of claim 16 not containing wind abatement stowing functionality or wind abatement extreme dampening functionality.

18 . The array of claim 1 not containing wind abatement stowing functionality or wind abatement extreme dampening functionality.

19 . The array of claim 8 , wherein the array comprises more than 10 rows and more than 10 columns of adjacent or conterminous modules.

20 . A photovoltaic array comprising

ground modules that have

a contact region that rests

on the ground

or

on a structure such that a region directly under the contact region does not contain free air;

and

comprising connector systems flexibly joining some modules at module edges or module edge frames in two directions (XY) and that limit z-axis module movement such that the maximum height difference between adjacent modules is less than 4 inches (100 mm),

wherein

the contact region rests on the structure at a contact surface,

the contact surface sits directly above a three-dimensional region between the contact surface and the ground,

a perimeter of the contact surface defines vertical walls of the three-dimensional region,

the contact region rests on the structure at a contact surface, and the structure contains a path with a starting point on the contact surface and ending in the structure at ground level directly beneath the starting point,

an arrangement of modules in the array withstands greater than 150 mph (240 kph) wind speeds without wind abatement stowing functionality or wind abatement extreme dampening functionality,

the ground supports greater than 800 adjacent or conterminous modules and controls where a face of the module points,

and

the array comprises more than 10 rows and more than 10 columns of adjacent or conterminous modules.
