Abstract

Among other things, an equipment for use on board a first ground transportation entity has (a) a receiver for information generated by a sensor of the environment of the first ground transportation entity, (b) a processor, and (c) a memory storing instructions executable by the processor to generate and send safety message information to a second ground transportation entity based on the information generated by the sensor.

Claims (43)

1. An apparatus comprising:

an equipment on board a first ground transportation entity, the equipment having

(a) a receiver configured to receive position correction information sent from a source external to the first ground transportation entity, the position correction information providing an accuracy enhancement for determination of a position of the first ground transportation entity,

(b) at least one processor, and

(c) a memory storing instructions executable by the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:

generating a position correction message based at least on the position correction information, the position correction message being configured to be used by a second ground transportation entity to enhance an accuracy of determination of a position of the second ground transportation entity by the second ground transportation entity; and

transmitting the position correction message to the second ground transportation entity,

wherein the source comprises roadside equipment, and

wherein, when the position correction message is transmitted to the second ground transportation entity, the second ground transportation entity is out of a range of the roadside equipment.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the position correction message is configured to enhance an accuracy of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) position.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the position correction information comprises differential GNSS information.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the position correction information comprises radio technical commission for maritime (RTCM) information.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , in which the operations comprise generating the position correction message based on information representing a parameter of position or motion of the first ground transportation entity.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the parameter of position or motion comprises a current position of the first ground transportation entity.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein generating the position correction message comprises:

determining a confidence level associated with the position correction message; and

transmitting the position correction message in response to determining that the confidence level satisfies a threshold condition.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein determining the confidence level is based on at least one of:

a time since the first ground transportation entity received the position correction information;

a distance of the first ground transportation entity from the source of the position correction information;

a direction of travel of the first ground transportation entity; or

a confidence level associated with the position correction information.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the receiver is configured to receive the position correction information over an Internet connection.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the position correction information is received from the source while the first ground transportation entity is in a transmission range of the source, and

wherein the position correction message is sent to the second ground transportation entity while the first ground transportation entity is out of the transmission range of the source.

11. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a receiver on board a first ground transportation entity, position correction information sent from a source external to the first ground transportation entity, the position correction information providing an accuracy enhancement for determination of a position of the first ground transportation entity;

generating, by equipment on board the first ground transportation entity, a position correction message based at least on the position correction information, the position correction message being configured to be used by a second ground transportation entity to enhance an accuracy of determination of a position of the second ground transportation entity by the second ground transportation entity; and

transmitting the position correction message to the second ground transportation entity,

wherein the source comprises roadside equipment, and

wherein, when the position correction message is transmitted to the second ground transportation entity, the second ground transportation entity is out of a range of the roadside equipment.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the position correction message is configured to enhance an accuracy of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) position.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the position correction information comprises differential GNSS information.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the position correction information comprises radio technical commission for maritime (RTCM) information.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein generating the position correction message is based on information representing a parameter of position or motion of the first ground transportation entity.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the parameter of position or motion comprises a current position of the first ground transportation entity.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein generating the position correction message comprises determining a confidence level associated with the position correction message, and

wherein transmitting the position correction message is performed in response to determining that the confidence level satisfies a threshold condition.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein determining the confidence level is based on at least one of:

a time since the first ground transportation entity received the position correction information;

a distance of the first ground transportation entity from the source of the position correction information;

a direction of travel of the first ground transportation entity; or

a confidence level associated with the position correction information.
