Abstract

A serration balloon can have a number of different components and can be made in a number of different manners. One or more longitudinally extending members with periodic raised wedges can be attached to a medical balloon. They can be attached with a fiber coating, a polymer coating, or other methods. A polymer matrix can be used to bond the longitudinally extending member to the surface of the balloon. The fiber coating can be, for example, a thread or mesh that secures the longitudinally extending member to the balloon. The medical balloon can be an angioplasty balloon, such as an off-the-shelf angioplasty balloon.

Claims (31)

1 . A method of manufacturing a serration balloon, comprising:

inflating a medical balloon;

positioning a plurality of longitudinally extending members along a surface of the medical balloon in the inflated state, each longitudinally extending member of the plurality of longitudinally extending members comprising a plurality of periodic raised wedges that are spaced apart by a plurality of grooves; and

positioning a single retention member consisting of a single layer of material around the entire circumference of the medical balloon and in the plurality of grooves of the longitudinally extending members to attach the plurality of longitudinally extending members to the medical balloon, wherein the plurality of periodic raised wedges rise above the single retention member, wherein the single retention member extends along the entire length the plurality of grooves and abuts the plurality of periodic raised wedges.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each raised wedge of the plurality of periodic raised wedges comprise a height between 100 μm and 500 μm.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each raised wedge of the plurality of periodic raised wedges comprise a length between 100 μm and 1 mm.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each groove the plurality grooves comprise a length between 1 times and 3 times the length of each raised wedge of the plurality of periodic raised wedges.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each groove of the plurality of grooves comprise a length between 100 μm and 3 mm.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of longitudinally extending members comprise strips of metal.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each raised wedge of the plurality of periodic raised wedges comprises a rounded protrusion.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the serration balloon is configured to widen an artery obstructed from plaque.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each raised wedge of the plurality of periodic raised wedges is protruding radially outward through the single retention member.

10 . A method of manufacturing a serration balloon, comprising:

inflating a medical balloon;

positioning a plurality of longitudinally extending members along a surface of the medical balloon in the inflated state, each longitudinally extending member of the plurality of longitudinally extending members comprising a plurality of periodic raised wedges that are spaced apart by a plurality of grooves; and

positioning a single retention member to secure the plurality of longitudinally extending members to a surface the medical balloon, wherein the single retention member extends proximally beyond a proximal end of the plurality of longitudinally extending members and the single retention member extends distally beyond a distal end of the plurality of longitudinally extending members, wherein the single retention member engages the plurality of grooves of the plurality of longitudinally extending members, wherein the plurality of longitudinally extending members comprise a longitudinal length along the surface of the medical balloon, wherein the single retention member comprises a longitudinal length greater than the longitudinal length of the plurality of longitudinally extending members, wherein the single retention member extends along the entire length the plurality of grooves and abuts the plurality of periodic raised wedges.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of longitudinally extending members comprises three longitudinally extending members.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of longitudinally extending members are equally spaced radially around the medical balloon.

13 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of periodic raised wedges are configured to engage with plaque when the medical balloon is expanded within a vessel of a patient.

14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the medical balloon extends beyond a proximal end of the plurality of longitudinally extending members.

15 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the medical balloon extends beyond a distal end of the plurality of longitudinally extending members.

16 . The method of claim 10 , wherein each raised wedge of the plurality of periodic raised wedges is protruding radially outward through the single retention member.

17 . A method of manufacturing a serration balloon, comprising:

inflating a medical balloon;

positioning a plurality of longitudinally extending members along a surface of the medical balloon in the inflated state, each longitudinally extending member of the plurality of longitudinally extending members comprising a plurality of periodic raised wedges that are spaced apart by a plurality of grooves; and

positioning a single retention member, wherein the single retention member extends along the entire length the plurality of grooves and abuts the plurality of periodic raised wedges, wherein the plurality of longitudinally extending members are sandwiched between the medical balloon and the single retention member, wherein the plurality of periodic raised wedges of the plurality of longitudinally extending members are configured for simultaneous penetration of plaque upon inflation of the medical balloon.

The method of claim 17 , wherein positioning the plurality of longitudinally extending members along the surface of the medical balloon in the inflated state comprises positioning each longitudinally extending member such that a primary plane is perpendicular to the surface of the medical balloon.

19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the plurality of periodic raised wedges are configured for controlled tearing of plaque during an angioplasty procedure.

20 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the medical balloon comprise an angioplasty balloon, further comprising an over-the-wire catheter.

21 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the single retention member spans from the proximal end of the medical balloon to the distal end of the medical balloon.

22 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the single retention member spans along cones of the medical balloon.
