Abstract

Bitcoins and the underlying blockchain technology are one of the main innovations in building decentralized applications. The effects of quantum computing on this technology are analyzed in general. Provided herein are effective solutions to address security vulnerabilities in a blockchain-based system that can be exploited by a quantum attacker.

Claims (48)

1. A method for generating a blockchain transaction to transfer currency using a fixed public/private key pair comprising:

referring to and obtaining the fixed public key stored in at least one block established prior to the blockchain transaction;

appending a plurality of random bits to the fixed public key to generate a padded public key

storing the plurality of random bits;

generating, using the padded public key, a blockchain address;

generating the blockchain transaction using the fixed public key and the plurality of random bits as input; and

signing the blockchain transaction using the fixed private key and the blockchain address.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein, in a transaction to transfer currency, generating the blockchain address comprises:

generating an encoding of a version of the blockchain;

hashing the padded public key; and

generating a checksum for the encoding of the version and the hashed padded public key.

3. A method for generating, using a fixed public/private key pair, a blockchain transaction for an associated blockchain, wherein the blockchain has an associated hash table comprising a plurality of public keys and corresponding hash values, the method comprising:

appending a plurality of random bits to the fixed public key to generate a padded public key;

storing the plurality of random bits;

generating, using the padded public key, a blockchain address;

generating the blockchain transaction using the plurality of random bits as input;

signing the blockchain transaction using the fixed private key and the blockchain address; and

associating the blockchain transaction with an entry in the hash table corresponding to the fixed public key.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the fixed public key is associated with a public key infrastructure (PKI) certificate.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

associating the blockchain transaction with the PKI certificate.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the blockchain address is associated with the PKI certificate.

7. A system comprising:

one or more processors;

a non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium in operable communication with at least one processor of the one or more processors, wherein the computer-readable storage medium contains one or more programming instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to generate a blockchain transaction to transfer currency using a fixed public/private key pair, the generating comprising:

referring to and obtaining the fixed public key stored in at least one block established prior to the blockchain transaction;

appending a plurality of random bits to the fixed public key to generate a padded public key;

storing the plurality of random bits;

generating, using the padded public key, a blockchain address;

generating the blockchain transaction using the fixed public key and the plurality of random bits as input; and

signing the blockchain transaction using the fixed private key and the blockchain address.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein in a transaction to transfer currency, generating the blockchain address comprises:

generating an encoding of a version of the blockchain;

hashing the padded public key;

generating a checksum for the encoding of the version and the hashed padded public key.

9. A system comprising:

one or more processors;

a non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium in operable communication with at least one processor of the one or more processors, wherein the computer-readable storage medium contains one or more programming instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to generate using a fixed public/private key pair, a blockchain transaction for an associated blockchain, wherein the blockchain has an associated hash table comprising a plurality of public keys and corresponding hash values, the generating comprising:

appending a plurality of random bits to the fixed public key to generate a padded public key;

storing the plurality of random bits;

generating, using the padded public key, a blockchain address;

generating the blockchain transaction using the plurality of random bits as input;

signing the blockchain transaction using the fixed private key and the blockchain address; and

associating the blockchain transaction with an entry in the hash table corresponding to the fixed public key.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the fixed public key is associated with a public key infrastructure (PKI) certificate.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the at least one processor to:

associate the blockchain transaction with the PKI certificate.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the blockchain address is associated with the PKI certificate.
