Abstract

Exemplary embodiments relate to updatable displays for transaction cards, such as credit cards or event passes. The displays may be, for instance, an electrophoretic or memory liquid crystal diode display. The transaction card may include a contact pad capable of engaging in wireless communication. Information may be exchanged between the transaction card and a mobile device or terminal, where a processor on the mobile device processes the received information to generate displayable information. The processor updates the display with the displayable information. The contact pad may be electrically connected to the display, and the display may derive electrical power to perform the updating from the wireless communication. For example, where the wireless communication is a near field communication (NFC), a radio frequency field may be generated that supplies enough power to run the processor and at least partially update the display.

Claims (44)

1 . A computer-implemented method, comprising:

authenticating, by a computing device, a user account to activate a contactless card;

initiating, by the computing device, an activation process to activate the contactless card;

presenting, by the computing device on a display device, a representation of the contactless card in a position relative to the computing device;

exchanging, by the computing device, data with the contactless card via a near-field communication (NFC) exchange, and the data comprising instructions to update a display on the contactless card; and

providing, by the computing device, via an NFC transceiver, an antenna, or both, power to the contactless card during the NFC exchange, the power utilized by the contactless card to update the display.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein authenticating the user account comprises authenticating, by the computing device, a login credential to log into an account via an application or webpage, wherein the account is associated with an issuing institution of the contactless card.

3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , comprising:

presenting, by the computing device and on the display device, an option to activate the contactless card; and

receiving, by the computing device, a selection of the option to activate the contactless card.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , comprising:

presenting, by the computing device and on the display device, an indication to tap or bring the contactless card near a location on the computing device.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the location is a location of a wireless transmitter of the computing device.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , wherein the wireless transmitter is a near-field communication (NFC) transmitter.

7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the indication includes instructions to position the contactless card near the computing device as presented in the display device.

8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the instructions include a name of an account holder, an identification number, an expiration date, a security code, or combination thereof to present on the display.

9 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, the computer-readable storage medium including instructions that when executed by circuitry, cause the circuitry to:

authenticate a user account to activate a contactless card;

initiate an activation process to activate the contactless card;

present on a display device, a representation of the contactless card in a position relative to the display device;

exchange data with the contactless card via a near-field communication (NFC) exchange, and the data comprising activation instructions to update a display on the contactless card; and

provide via an NFC transceiver, an antenna, or both, power to the contactless card during the NFC exchange, the power utilized by the contactless card to update the display.

10 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the instructions further cause the circuitry to authenticate the user account including authenticating a login credential to log into an account via an application or webpage, wherein the account is associated with an issuing institution of the contactless card.

11 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , comprising the instructions further configured to cause the circuitry to:

present, on the display device, an option to activate the contactless card; and

receive a selection of the option to activate the contactless card.

12 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , comprising the instructions further configured to cause the circuitry to present, on the display device, an indication to tap or bring the contactless card near a location on the circuitry.

13 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the location is a location of a wireless transmitter of the circuitry.

14 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the wireless transmitter is a near-field communication (NFC) transmitter.

15 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the indication includes instructions to position the contactless card near the display device as presented in the display device.

16 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the activation instructions include a name of an account holder, an identification number, an expiration date, a security code, or combination thereof to present on the display.

17 . A computing apparatus comprising:

a processor; and

a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, configure the apparatus to:

authenticate a user account to activate a contactless card;

initiate an activation process to activate the contactless card;

present, on a display device, a representation of the contactless card in a position relative to the computing apparatus;

exchange data with the contactless card via a near-field communication (NFC) exchange, and the data comprising instructions to update a display on the contactless card; and

provide via an NFC transceiver, an antenna, or both, power to the contactless card during the NFC exchange, the power utilized by the contactless card to update the display.

18 . The computing apparatus of claim 17 , wherein authenticating the user account comprises authenticating a login credential to log into an account via an application or webpage, wherein the account is associated with an issuing institution of the contactless card.

19 . The computing apparatus of claim 18 , comprising the apparatus to:

present, on the display device, an option to activate the contactless card; and

receive a selection of the option to activate the contactless card.

20 . The computing apparatus of claim 17 , comprising the apparatus to present, on the display device, an indication to tap or bring the contactless card near a location on the computing apparatus.
