Abstract

Claims (21)

1 . A device, having a plurality of dimensions, adapted for placement proximate to a patient's lower esophageal sphincter (LES) using endoscopic, laparoscopic, or surgical techniques and programmed to treat esophageal dysfunction, the device comprising

a stimulator enclosed within a housing; and

a plurality of electrodes, wherein each of said plurality of electrodes is attached to the outer surface of the housing using conductors at least 1 mm in length, wherein the stimulator is programmed to generate a plurality of pulses, and wherein each pulse of the plurality of pulses has an amplitude defined such that swallowing of the patient is not hindered while the plurality of pulses is being delivered to the patient.

2 . The device of claim 1 wherein the electrodes are adapted to be placed in a right or left anterior quadrant of the LES.

3 . The device of claim 1 wherein the housing comprises a needle having a length in a range of 5-50 mm and adapted to create a pathway for electrode implantation into a muscularis of the LES.

4 . The device of claim 1 wherein each electrode of the plurality of electrodes is adapted to be placed entirely within the LES.

5 . The device of claim 1 wherein each electrode of the plurality of electrodes is adapted to be placed proximate to the LES and generate an electrical field that stimulates the LES.

6 . The device of claim 1 wherein the dimensions include a length of at least 6 mm long and no more than 10 cm long to minimize fibrosis within a peritoneal cavity.

7 . The device of claim 1 wherein the device is adapted to be inserted into a laparoscopic trocar and has a diameter of greater than 6 mm and less than 25 mm.

8 . The device of claim 1 wherein said device has an energy source that is rechargeable.

9 . The device of claim 8 wherein the device has a recharge frequency of no more than once per day for 6 hours.

10 . The device of claim 1 wherein said device has an energy source that is a battery and wherein said battery is at least one of a solid state battery, lithium ion battery, and super capacitor battery.

11 . The device of claim 1 wherein said device has an energy receiving unit and wherein said energy receiving unit is configured to be anchored to an abdominal wall of the patient to maximize coupling between energy transmitting and receiving units.

12 . The device of claim 1 wherein said device is not rechargeable and has an implant life of at least 1 year.

13 . The device of claim 1 wherein said electrodes are permanently attached to the housing by insulated conductors having a length no longer than 65 cm.

14 . The device of claim 1 wherein the electrodes are attached to the housing by insulated conductors and wherein the insulated conductors are detachable from the housing and have a length no longer than 65 cm.

15 . The device of claim 1 wherein the device is adapted to be attached to an abdominal wall of the patient.

16 . The device of claim 1 wherein the device is adapted to be attached to the outer surface or serosa of a stomach wall of the patient.

17 . The device of claim 1 wherein the device is adapted to be delivered and anchored through a single port laparoscopic procedure.

18 . The device of claim 1 wherein the device is adapted to be delivered and anchored using an articulated trocar in a laparoscopic procedure.

19 . The device of claim 1 wherein the device is adapted to be delivered into a peritoneal cavity of the patient through an incision that is created for a laparoscopic port.
