Abstract

A system and method for providing image guidance for placement of one or more medical devices at a target location. The system can be used to determine one or more affected regions corresponding to the operation of one or more medical devices and display at least a portion of the one or more affected regions. The affected regions can correspond to predicted affected regions and/or dynamic affected regions and can be based at least in part on a variance parameter of the medical device.

Claims (57)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving first emplacement data corresponding to a medical device;

determining an emplacement of a virtual medical device with respect to a point-of-view location based at least in part on the first emplacement data, wherein the virtual medical device corresponds to the medical device;

receiving operating parameters corresponding to the medical device;

determining a first predicted affected region based at least in part on the operating parameters and a predicted advancement of the medical device along a forward trajectory, wherein the operating parameters comprise a variance parameter that corresponds to a margin of error associated with said determining the first predicted affected region;

determining a second predicted affected region based at least in part on the variance parameter; and

causing one or more displays to display:

a perspective view of at least a portion of the virtual medical device,

a perspective view of the first predicted affected region, and

a perspective view of the second predicted affected region.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining an emplacement of the first predicted affected region, wherein causing the one or more displays to display the perspective view of the first predicted affected region comprises causing the one or more displays to display the perspective view of the first predicted affected region based at least in part on the determined emplacement of the first predicted affected region.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the first predicted affected region comprises determining the first predicted affected region based at least in part on the variance parameter.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second predicted affected region is smaller than the first predicted affected region.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising determining a third predicted affected region based at least in part on the variance parameter, wherein the third predicted affected region is larger than the first predicted affected region.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the variance parameter comprises a first threshold and a second threshold, the second threshold being greater than the first threshold, wherein the first threshold is used to determine the second predicted affected region and the second threshold is used to determine the third predicted affected region.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

causing the one or more displays to display:

a perspective view of the second predicted affected region; and

a perspective view of the third predicted affected region.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the point-of-view location comprises at least one of a location of a user, an expected location of the user, or a fixed location relative to the one or more displays.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the medical device comprises an ablation needle and the operating parameters comprise at least one of a power level of the ablation needle, a duration setting of the ablation needle, or a model of the ablation needle.

10. A system, comprising:

one or more processors communicatively coupled with one or more displays, and a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing computer-executable instructions that when executed by the one or more processors cause the one or more processors to:

receive first emplacement data corresponding to a medical device;

determine an emplacement of a virtual medical device with respect to a point-of-view location based at least in part on the first emplacement data, wherein the virtual medical device corresponds to the medical device;

receive operating parameters corresponding to the medical device;

determine a first predicted affected region based at least in part on the operating parameters and a predicted advancement of the medical device along a forward trajectory, wherein the operating parameters comprise a variance parameter that corresponds to a margin of error associated with the determination of the first predicted affected region;

determine a second predicted affected region based at least in part on the variance parameter; and

cause the one or more displays to display:

a perspective view of at least a portion of the virtual medical device,

a perspective view of the first predicted affected region, and

a perspective view of the second predicted affected region.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the computer-executable instructions when executed further cause the one or more processors to determine an emplacement of the first predicted affected region, wherein to cause the one or more displays to display the perspective view of the first predicted affected region, the computer-executable instructions further cause the one or more processors to cause the one or more displays to display the perspective view of the first predicted affected region based at least in part on the determined emplacement of the first predicted affected region.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the variance parameter comprises a first threshold and a second threshold, the second threshold being greater than the first threshold.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the computer-executable instructions when executed further cause the one or more processors to:

determine the second predicted affected region based at least in part on the first threshold, wherein the second predicted affected region is smaller than the first predicted affected region;

determine a third predicted affected region based at least in part on the second threshold, wherein the third predicted affected region is larger than the first predicted affected region; and

cause the one or more displays to display a perspective view of the third predicted affected region.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the point-of-view location comprises at least one of a location of a user, an expected location of the user, or a fixed location relative to the one or more displays.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the medical device comprises an ablation needle and the operating parameters comprise at least one of a power level of the ablation needle, a duration setting of the ablation needle, or a model of the ablation needle.

16. A computer-readable, non-transitory storage medium storing computer-executable instructions that when executed by one or more processors cause the one or more processors to:

receive first emplacement data corresponding to a medical device;

determine an emplacement of a virtual medical device with respect to a point-of-view location based at least in part on the first emplacement data, wherein the virtual medical device corresponds to the medical device;

receive operating parameters corresponding to the medical device;

determine a first predicted affected region based at least in part on the operating parameters and a predicted advancement of the medical device along a forward trajectory, wherein the operating parameters comprise a variance parameter that corresponds to a margin of error associated with said determining the first predicted affected region;

determine a second predicted affected region based at least in part on the variance parameter; and

cause one or more displays to display:

a perspective view of at least a portion of the virtual medical device,

a perspective view of the first predicted affected region, and

a perspective view of the second predicted affected region.

17. The computer-readable, non-transitory storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the computer-executable instructions when executed further cause the one or more processors to determine an emplacement of the first predicted affected region, wherein to cause the one or more displays to display the perspective view of the first predicted affected region, the computer-executable instructions further cause the one or more processors to cause the one or more displays to display the perspective view of the first predicted affected region based at least in part on the determined emplacement of the first predicted affected region.

18. The computer-readable, non-transitory storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the variance parameter comprises a first threshold and a second threshold, the second threshold being greater than the first threshold.

19. The computer-readable, non-transitory storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the computer-executable instructions when executed further cause the one or more processors to:

determine the second predicted affected region based at least in part on the operating parameters and the first threshold, wherein the second predicted affected region is smaller than the first predicted affected region;

determine a third predicted affected region based at least in part on the operating parameters and the second threshold, wherein the third predicted affected region is larger than the first predicted affected region; and
