Abstract

Methods of determining one or more shading conditions associated with a structure are provided. A method may include determining a first azimuth of a reference roof edge relative to an orientation of a first image of a structure. The method may further include determining a second azimuth of the reference roof edge relative to a second image captured proximate the structure. In addition, the method may include determining one or more shading conditions associated with the structure based on the first azimuth and the second azimuth. Non-transitory computer-readable media is also disclosed.

Claims (32)

1 . A method of calculating one or more shading conditions associated with a structure, comprising:

determining a first azimuth of a reference roof edge relative to an orientation of a first image of a structure;

determining a second azimuth of the reference roof edge relative to a second image, different from the first image, captured proximate the structure;

determining one or more shading conditions associated with the structure based on the first azimuth and the second azimuth; and

determining an orientation of an image capture device for capturing the second image based on the first azimuth of the reference roof edge and the second azimuth of the reference roof edge, wherein determining the one or more shading conditions comprises determining the one or more shading conditions for a time period for known sun positions during the time period based on the orientation of the image capture device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein calculating the one or more shading conditions comprises identifying shading objects in the second image.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising capturing the second image via positioning the image capture device, including a pole having a spherical camera coupled thereto, at a determined measurement location, wherein at least a portion of the spherical camera is positioned above a roof edge of the structure.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein capturing the second image comprises capturing a spherical image with a spherical camera including a dual-axis electronic accelerometer for determining a downward view of the spherical image and an upward view of the spherical image.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining one or more shading conditions is further based on a known tilt of a roof edge of the structure.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the reference roof edge comprises an outer roof edge including at least one of an eave and a ridge.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the reference roof edge is substantially flat.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the orientation of the image capture device is used to determine locations of shading obstructions.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the orientation of the image capture device is an absolute orientation.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a first portion of the second image is an upward view covering all directions corresponding to all possible sun angles throughout a year, wherein a second portion of the second image is a downward view covering the reference roof edge.

11 . A method of determining at least one shading condition for a solar power system, comprising:

determining a first azimuth of a reference roof edge relative to an orientation of a first image of a structure;

determining a second azimuth of the reference roof edge relative to a second image, different from the first image, captured proximate the structure;

determining at least one shading condition associated with the structure based on the first azimuth and the second azimuth; and

determining an orientation of an image capture device for capturing the second image based on the first azimuth of the reference roof edge and the second azimuth of the reference roof edge, wherein determining the one or more shading conditions comprises determining the one or more shading conditions for a time period for known sun positions during the time period based on the orientation of the image capture device.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein determining the first azimuth of the reference roof edge comprises determining an azimuth of an outer reference roof edge including at least one of an cave and a ridge.

13 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising capturing the second image via a spherical camera coupled to a pole for positioning at least a portion of the spherical camera above at least a portion of a roof of the structure.

14 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising capturing, via a spherical camera having at least a portion positioned above at least a portion of a roof of the structure, the second image at a measurement location.

15 . A method of calculating one or more shading conditions associated with a structure having a reference roof edge with a known absolute roof edge azimuth, comprising:

determining an azimuth of the reference roof edge relative to an image captured proximate the structure;

determining one or more shading conditions associated with the structure based on the known absolute roof edge azimuth and the azimuth of the reference roof edge relative to the image; and

determining an orientation of an image capture device for capturing the image based on the known absolute roof edge azimuth and the azimuth of the reference roof edge, wherein determining the one or more shading conditions comprises determining the one or more shading conditions for a time period for known sun positions during the time period based on the orientation of the image capture device.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the image comprises an image of the reference roof edge.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the image of the reference roof edge is a spherical image, a drone captured image, or any combination thereof.

18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the image of the reference roof edge is in a lower hemisphere of a spherical image.

19 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the image is a spherical image.

20 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the image comprises a spherical image including the reference roof edge in the lower hemisphere of the spherical image.

21 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising capturing the image via a drone.
