Abstract

GPS-based position reporting suffers from probabilistic error. The system and methods discussed herein reduce uncertainty by mapping a geometric figure that encompasses a GPS-based reported location and that bounds corresponding predetermined-as-more-probable true locations (MPTL's) among possible locations for the source of the reported location. The mapped figure is overlaid on a relatively accurate mapping of substantially adjacent polygonal areas. Areas of overlap are used for picking among the areas, the polygonal area most likely to be occupied by the source. In one embodiment, the polygonal areas are closely packed parking spots in a parking lot, garage or other like structure, the source is a customer's mobile phone and an attendant is tasked with quickly delivering ordered goods to the customer's parking spot.

Claims (69)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving a signal from a position reporting device, wherein the position reporting device includes a mobile computing device and the signal is based on a GPS signal received by the mobile computing device;

determining, based at least in part on the signal, a reported location;

determining a position of the reported location relative to a map, wherein the map comprises substantially adjacent polygonal areas associated with an establishment;

generating, based at least in part on the position of the reported location and at least one more probable true location (MPTL) representing possible locations for the position reporting device, a geometric figure on the map that encompasses the reported location on the map;

determining a size of the geometric figure based at least in part on noise data associated with the signal;

determining an overlap of the geometric figure with a region of the substantially adjacent polygonal areas;

determining an overlap score based on the overlap between the geometric figure and the region, wherein the overlap score is indicative of the region corresponding to the MPTL; and
