Abstract

Systems, methods, and computer program products are provided for tracking one or more items. In one exemplary embodiment, there is provided a method for tracking an item. The method may include periodically detecting sensor information of an item by a sensor device. The method may also include periodically transmitting the sensor information by the sensor device. The method may also include receiving the sensor information at a tracking center, storing the sensor information in a database, and reviewing the stored sensor information. The method may further include using the stored sensor information to update shipment information for a package.

Claims (58)

1. A tracking system for updating shipping information for shipped items, the shipped items being associated with a plurality of sensor devices, the tracking system comprising:

a sensor tracking server;

a master sensor device, selected from the plurality of sensor devices, the master sensor device being associated with a first item of the shipped items and being configured to:

determine first sensor information associated with the first item; and

perform an energy management calculation based on a power usage of the master sensor device based on instructions received from the sensor tracking server; and

a plurality of slave sensor devices, selected from the plurality of sensor devices, the slave sensor devices associated with a plurality of second items of the shipped items, the slave sensor devices being configured to determine second sensor information associated with the plurality of second items,

wherein when the energy management calculation indicates that the master sensor device has sufficient power to transmit the first sensor information and the second sensor information to the sensor tracking server:

the slave sensor devices are configured transmit to the master sensor device the second sensor information, and

the master sensor device is configured to transmit the first sensor information and the second sensor information to the sensor tracking server.

2. The tracking system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor tracking server is configured to:

receive, from the master sensor device, the first sensor information and the second sensor information;

update shipment information for at least one of the plurality of second items based on the second sensor information, the updated shipment information including the route modification for the at least one second item; and

transmit the updated shipment information to a selected slave sensor device of the plurality of slave sensor devices, the selected slave sensor device being associated with the at least one of the plurality of second items.

3. The tracking system of claim 2 , wherein the updated shipment information is based on historical information.

4. The tracking system of claim 1 , wherein the master sensor device is further configured to:

detect that the plurality of slave sensor devices has entered within a predetermined proximity of the master sensor device;

generate association information indicating an association between the master sensor device and the slave sensor devices when the slave sensor devices are within the predetermined proximity of the master sensor device; and

transmit the association information to the sensor tracking server.

5. The tracking system of claim 4 , wherein the master sensor device is further configured to:

detect that at least one slave sensor device of the slave sensor devices is no longer within the predetermined proximity of the master sensor device;

update the association information by removing the association between the master sensor device and the at least one slave sensor device; and

transmit the updated association information to the sensor tracking server.

6. The tracking system of claim 1 , wherein

the sensor tracking server is further configured to transmit, to the master sensor device, future configuration parameters associated with a predetermined location of the master sensor device; and

the master sensor device is further configured to automatically modify its configuration based on the future configuration parameters when the master sensor device reaches the predetermined location.

7. A computer-implemented method for updating shipment information, the method comprising:

determining, by a first sensor device, that a second sensor device is within a predetermined proximity of the first sensor device, the first sensor device being associated with a first item and the second sensor device being associated with a second item;

performing an energy management calculation based on a power usage of the first sensor device;

transmitting, by the second sensor device to the first sensor device, second sensor information obtained by the second sensor, when the calculation indicates that the first sensor device has sufficient power to transmit the second sensor information to a sensor tracking server; and

transmitting, by the first sensor device to the sensor tracking server, the second sensor information.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

transmitting, by the first sensor device to the sensor tracking server, association information indicative of an association between the first sensor device and the second sensor device.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

determining, by the first sensor device, that the second sensor device is no longer within the predetermined proximity of the first sensor device; and

transmitting, by the first sensor device to the sensor tracking server, updated association information removing the association between the first sensor device and the second sensor device.

10. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

transmitting, by the first sensor device to the sensor tracking server, first sensor information obtained by the first sensor.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising transmitting the first sensor information and the second sensor information when the first sensor device is in a transmission range of the sensor tracking server and the second sensor device is out of range of the transmission range of the sensor tracking server.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising transmitting, by the first sensor device to the sensor tracking server, the first sensor information and the second sensor information when the second sensor device does not have an ability to communicate directly with the sensor tracking server.

13. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

transmitting, by the second sensor device to the first sensor device, a temporary communication right permitting the first sensor device to transmit the second server information to the sensor tracking server.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

receiving, by the second sensor device, the temporary communication right from the sensor tracking server.

15. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

receiving, by the first sensor device from the sensor tracking server, an updated configuration parameter for the second sensor device based on the transmitted second sensor information; and

transmitting, by the first sensor device to the second sensor device, the updated configuration parameter.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the updated configuration parameter is based on historical information.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the updated configuration parameter includes routing information for one or more future items.

18. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

updating, by the sensor tracking server, shipment information for the second item based on the second sensor information, the updated shipment information including a route modification for the second item; and

transmitting, by the sensor tracking server, the updated shipment information to the second sensor device.

19. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

determining, by the first sensor device, that a data storage of the first sensor device is less than a predetermined threshold; and

reducing, by the first sensor device, the frequency of determining the first sensor information, overwriting past data stored in the data storage, or combining the past data to summarize the past data when the data storage is less than the predetermined threshold.

20. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

selecting the first sensor device as a master sensor device from a plurality of sensor devices;

receiving, by the master sensor device, sensor information from other sensor devices in the plurality of sensor devices; and

transmitting, by the master sensor device, the sensor information to the tracking center.
