Abstract

A lithotripter is provided that includes a lithotripsy apparatus for treatment of a urinary tract stone by fragmentation. The lithotripsy apparatus includes a lithotripsy wave guide shaft configured to transmit an energy form to at least one urinary tract stone. The lithotripter includes a sensing device configured to provide signal data for determining optimal application of energy during treatment with the lithotripsy apparatus. The lithotripter includes a processor configured to collect the signal data and provide feedback to a user. The processor has a control logic configured to determine at least one of: a) if the lithotripsy wave guide shaft is in contact with a tissue; b) if the lithotripsy wave guide shaft is in contact with a stone; c) type of stone; d) if a user is applying force in excess of a predetermined threshold; and e) physical characteristics of a stone. A method is also provided.

Claims (39)

1. A lithotripter system, comprising:

a lithotripter for treatment of a stone by fragmentation, the lithotripter configured to transmit an energy using two different frequencies to at least one stone;

a sensing device configured to receive a portion of energy from the at least one stone, and to generate a response signal in response thereto including an indication of a physical characteristic of the stone; and

a processor configured to determine, using the indication of the physical characteristic of the stone, at least one of a lithotripsy user alert or a tailored lithotripsy fragmentation parameter for fragmenting the stone.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the response signal includes at least one of current, voltage, frequency, resonance energy information, or positional information.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein one frequency of the two different frequencies comprises a gating or modulating frequency.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a user-feedback device configured to provide an alert that indicates the physical characteristic of the stone.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lithotripter comprises a distal portion having one or more sharp edges.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lithotripter includes a portion that is straight and rigid.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lithotripter includes a flexible portion.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lithotripter further comprises a lithotripsy driver and a driver housing.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor comprises control circuitry configured to determine the tailored lithotripsy fragmentation parameter; and

the tailored lithotripsy fragmentation parameter comprises at least one of a fragmentation energy, a drive frequency, or an amplitude.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the physical characteristic of the stone is a morphological characteristic of the stone.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the response signal includes at least one of:

whether the lithotripter is in contact with the stone;

a stone type of the stone; or

a force being applied to the stone.

12. A method for treating at least one stone, the method comprising:

delivering energy to the at least one stone;

receiving a portion of energy from the at least one stone;

generating a response signal in response to the received portion of energy;

determining an indication of a physical characteristic of the stone, using the generated response signal;

determining at least one of a lithotripsy user alert or a tailored lithotripsy fragmentation parameter using the indication of the physical characteristic of the stone; and

delivering energy using the tailored lithotripsy fragmentation parameter to the stone.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising displaying visual data corresponding to the physical characteristic of the stone.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising determining whether to deliver energy to the stone based on at least one operational condition.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising determining an amount of energy to deliver to the stone, based on at least one operational condition.

16. A system for treating a stone by fragmentation, the system comprising:

a lithotripter configured to transmit excitation energy to the stone, the excitation energy including a plurality of different frequencies;

a sensing device configured to receive a portion of energy from the stone and generate a response signal in response to the received portion of energy, the response signal including an indication of a physical characteristic of the stone; and

a processor configured to determine, based on the indication of the physical characteristic of the stone at least one of a lithotripsy user alert or a tailored lithotripsy fragmentation parameter for fragmenting the stone.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein a frequency of the plurality of different frequencies comprises a gating or modulating frequency.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the lithotripter includes at least one of a distal portion having one or more sharp edges, a portion that is straight and rigid, or a flexible portion.

19. The system of claim 16 , wherein:

the response signal includes at least one of current, voltage, frequency, resonance energy information, or positional information;

the physical characteristic of the stone is a morphological characteristic of the stone; and

the response signal includes at least one of whether the lithotripter is in contact with the stone, a stone type of the stone, or a force being applied to the stone.

20. The system of claim 16 , wherein the lithotripsy user alert comprises visual data corresponding to the physical characteristic of the stone.
