Abstract

A depth sensing device, situated above a threshold to a room, collects asynchronous, non-personally-identifiable data regarding a count of people entering and exiting across the threshold. Phase shift of modulated infrared light reflected from a light source to an object is measured and converted into depth data indicating the depth of the pixels therein. The depth data is used to classify detected objects as human, and to track their movement bi-directionally through the threshold. A running count of humans entering or exiting the room is streamed to a remote server, which aggregates data collected from a number of depth sensing devices. The server then makes that data available at various levels of visualization corresponding to different levels of a hierarchy of nested virtual spaces, such as a multi-entrance room, or a building. Entities that access this data may see a real-time, accurate count of humans currently occupying the virtual space, as well as historical data.

Claims (46)

1. A system comprising

a first sensing device configured to monitor a first area, the first sensing device comprising:

a sensor for capturing data regarding a detected object,

a first module for converting the captured data into event data for the detected object, and

a second module for (a) determining, from the event data, whether the detected object is a human, (b) in a case that the detected object is determined to be a human, determining when the human has crossed a predetermined threshold within the first area, and (c) generating an incremental count value in response to the determining when the human has crossed the predetermined threshold.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein neither of the event data nor the generated incremental count data comprises personally-identifiable data for identifying the detected human.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first sensing device comprises an accelerometer.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is positioned above a doorway.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a server remote from the first sensing device, wherein the server is communicatively coupled to the first sensing device via a network, the server being configured to receive the generated incremental count data from the first sensing device.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the server is configured to maintain a total count value indicative of a total number of humans determined to be in a virtual space, and wherein the server is configured to adjust the total count value based on the incremental count value.

7. The system of claim 6 , further comprising:

a second sensor for capturing data regarding a second detected object;

a third module for converting the captured data regarding the second detected object into second event data for the second detected object; and

a fourth module for (a) determining from the second event data, whether the second detected object is a human, (b) in a case that the second detected object is determined to be a second human, determining when the second human has crossed a second predetermined threshold within the second area, and (c) generating a second incremental count value in response to the determining when the second human has crossed the second predetermined threshold,

wherein the server is communicatively coupled to the second sensing device via the network, the server being configured to receive the generated second incremental count data from the second sensing device, and wherein the server is configured to adjust the total count value based on the second incremental count value.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a depth sensor configured to detect a depth of the object from the depth sensor.
