Abstract

Systems and methods that modify one or more parameters associated with a progressive award based on one or more parameters of a gaming device associated with the progressive award.

Claims (56)

1 . A gaming system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

maintain a progressive award,

responsive to a first placement of a wager amount on a first play of a first game at a first gaming device of a first grouping of gaming devices having average expected payback percentages in a first range of average expected payback percentages:

increment the progressive award by a first amount which is based on the wager amount and a first progressive award contribution rate for the first grouping of gaming devices, and

communicate data that results in a display, by a first display device, of the progressive award incremented by the first amount, and

responsive to a second placement of the wager amount on a second play of a second game at a second gaming device of a second, different grouping of gaming devices having average expected payback percentages in a second, different range of average expected payback percentages:

increment the progressive award by a second, different amount which is based on the wager amount and a second, different progressive award contribution rate for the second, different grouping of gaming devices, and

communicate data that results in a display, by a second display device, of the progressive award incremented by the second, different amount.

2 . The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the first gaming device and the second gaming device are the same gaming device at different points in time and the first display device and the second display device are the same display device.

increment the progressive award by a third amount which is based on the wager amount and a third, different progressive award contribution rate for the third, different grouping of gaming devices, and

communicate data that results in a display, by a third display device, of the progressive award incremented by the third amount.

7 . The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to an occurrence of a progressive award triggering event in association with the first placement of the wager amount on the first play of the first game at the first gaming device, cause the processor to determine a first probability of the first gaming device winning the progressive award based on the wager amount and the first progressive award contribution rate associated with the first grouping of gaming devices.

8 . The gaming system of claim 7 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to the occurrence of the progressive award triggering event in association with the second placement of the wager amount on the second play of the second game at the second gaming device, cause the processor to determine a second, different probability of the second gaming device winning the progressive award based on the wager amount and the second, different progressive award contribution rate associated with the second, different grouping of gaming devices.

9 . The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that:

when executed by the processor responsive to an occurrence of a progressive award triggering event in association with the first placement of the wager amount on the first play of the first game at the first gaming device, cause the processor to associate, with the first gaming device, a first quantity of entries into a drawing to win the progressive award, the first quantity of entries being based on the wager amount and the first progressive award contribution rate associated with the first grouping of gaming devices, and

when executed by the processor responsive to the occurrence of the progressive award triggering event in association with the second placement of the wager amount on the second play of the second game at the second gaming device, cause the processor to associate, with the second gaming device, a second, different quantity of entries into the drawing to win the progressive award, the second, different quantity of entries being based on the wager amount and the second, different progressive award contribution rate associated with the second, different grouping of gaming devices.

10 . A gaming system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

maintain a progressive award,

responsive to a first placement of a wager amount on a first play of a first game at a first gaming device having a first average expected payback percentage:

increment the progressive award by a first amount which is based on the wager amount and a first progressive award contribution rate for gaming devices having average expected payback percentages in a first range of average expected payback percentages, and

communicate data that results in a display, by a first display device, of the progressive award incremented by the first amount, and

responsive to a second placement of the wager amount on a second play of a second game at a second gaming device having a second, different average expected payback percentage:

increment the progressive award by a second, different amount which is based on the wager amount and a second, different progressive award contribution rate for gaming devices having average expected payback percentages in a second, different range of average expected payback percentages, and

communicate data that results in a display, by a second display device, of the progressive award incremented by the second, different amount.

11 . The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the first gaming device and the second gaming device are the same gaming device at different points in time and the first display device and the second display device are the same display device.

12 . The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to a progressive award configuration event, cause the processor to associate the first gaming device with the gaming devices having average expected payback percentages in the first range of average expected payback percentage.

13 . The gaming system of claim 12 , wherein the progressive award configuration event comprises any of: a receipt of gaming device attribute information of the first gaming device, and a request of gaming device attribute information from the first gaming device.

14 . The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to a third placement of the wager amount on a third play of a third game at a third gaming device having a third average expected payback percentage, cause the processor to:

increment the progressive award by a third amount which is based on the wager amount and a third, different progressive award contribution rate for gaming devices having average expected payback percentages in a third, different range of average expected payback percentages, and

communicate data that results in a display, by a third display device, of the progressive award incremented by the third amount.

15 . The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to an occurrence of a progressive award triggering event in association with the first placement of the wager amount on the first play of the first game at the first gaming device, cause the processor to determine a first probability of the first gaming device winning the progressive award based on the wager amount and the first progressive award contribution rate.

16 . The gaming system of claim 15 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to the occurrence of the progressive award triggering event in association with the second placement of the wager amount on the second play of the second game at the second gaming device, cause the processor to determine a second, different probability of the second gaming device winning the progressive award based on the wager amount and the second, different progressive award contribution rate.
