Abstract

A method for forming an incision in an eye, the method including performing a first pass of a first laser beam along a path within an eye, wherein after completion of the first pass there exists a residual uncut layer at an anterior surface of a cornea of the eye. The method further including performing a second pass of a second laser beam only along a portion of the path that contains the residual uncut layer, wherein after completion of the second pass, the residual uncut layer is transformed into a full complete through surface incision.

Claims (36)

1. A laser system configured to perform a laser procedure for forming an incision in an eye, the system comprising:

a laser;

an optics assembly, the optics assembly comprising a x-y scanner, a z focus mechanism, and a focusing optic; wherein the optics assembly defines a laser beam path that extends from the laser to a patient interface device;

a structured light source and a structured light camera;

a controller;

a biometry scanner comprising the structured light source, the structured light camera and the controller; and,

the system configured to provide a first laser beam having an energy in the range of 3 μJ-5 μJ, and a first numeric aperture at the patient interface device.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first laser beam has a pulse width of from about 1 femtosecond to 100 picoseconds.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the system is configured to provide a second laser beam having a second energy and a second numeric aperture at the patient interface.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the system is configured to provide a second laser beam having a second energy and a second numeric aperture at the patient interface; wherein the second energy is larger than the first energy; and, wherein the second numerical aperture is larger than the first numerical aperture.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the laser is a femtosecond laser.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to provide a second laser beam having a second energy and a second numeric aperture at the patient interface.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to provide a second laser beam having a second energy and a second numeric aperture at the patient interface; wherein the second energy is larger than the first energy; and, wherein the second numerical aperture is larger than the first numerical aperture.

8. A laser system configured to perform a laser procedure for forming an incision in an eye, the system comprising:

a laser;

an optics assembly, the optics assembly comprising a x-y scanner and a focusing optic; wherein the optics assembly defines a laser beam path that extends from the laser to a patient interface device;

a controller;

the system configured to provide a first laser beam having a first energy and a first numeric aperture at the patient interface device; and a second laser beam having a second energy and a second numeric aperture at the patient interface;

wherein the first and the second energies are each above the photo-disruption threshold;

wherein the second energy is larger than the first energy;

wherein the second numerical aperture is larger than the first numerical aperture.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first laser beam has a pulse width of from about 1 femtosecond to 100 picoseconds; and the second laser beam has a pulse width of from about 1 femtosecond to 100 picoseconds.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first energy is in the range of 3 μJ-5 μJ.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second energy is in the range of 6 μJ-14 μJ.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first energy is in the range of 3 μJ-5 μJ.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second energy is in the range of 6 μJ-14 μJ.

14. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a structured light source and a structured light camera; and a biometry scanner comprising the structured light source, the structured light camera and the controller.

15. A laser system configured to perform a laser procedure for forming an incision in an eye, the system comprising:

a laser;

an optics assembly, the optics assembly comprising a x-y scanner, a z focus mechanism, and a focusing optic; wherein the optics assembly defines a laser beam path, that extends from the laser to a patient interface device;

a light source and a camera;

a controller;

a biometry scanner comprising the structured light source, the structured light camera and the controller;

the system configured to provide a first laser beam having a first energy and a first numeric aperture at the patient interface device; and a second laser beam having a second energy and a second numeric aperture at the patient interface;

wherein the first and the second energies are each above the photodisruption threshold.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the second energy is larger than the first energy; and wherein the second numerical aperture is larger than the first numerical aperture.
