Abstract

A method that includes illuminating an eye with light at a first time and a second time and generating a first image of the eye based on the light that illuminates the eye at the first time. The method includes generating a second image of the eye based on the light that illuminates the eye at the second time. The method further includes positioning a laser source relative to the eye, wherein the laser source generates a therapeutic laser beam to be directed to the eye, wherein the first time is just prior to the therapeutic laser beam being directed to the eye and the second time is prior to the first time. The method further includes correcting orientation of the laser source relative to the eye based on a correlation function that is defined for the first and second images of the eye.

Claims (36)

1. A laser therapeutic system, comprising:

a) a laser source that emits a therapeutic laser beam toward an eye;

b) a laser control system in communication with the laser source, wherein the laser control system controls a parameter of the therapeutic laser beam; and,

c) an analyzer, the analyzer comprising:

i) a light source that illuminates the eye;

ii) a detector that receives reflected light from the eye and generates images of the eye;

iii) a memory comprising computer executable instructions; and

iv) a processor in communication with the laser control system, the detector and the memory, wherein the processor receives the images of the eye and executes the computer executable instructions, the instructions comprising a global correlation algorithm, the global correlation algorithm comprising a means for eliminating eyelid interference;

v) whereby the processor is capable of precisely determining an iris orientation without singling out and registering particular points in the pre-treatment and treatment image of the iris, so as to generate a signal based on a correlation function that is defined for the images of the eye and the signal is able to rotate a coordinate system to correct orientation of the therapeutic laser beam relative so the eye, and wherein the signal is received by the laser control system, which uses the signal to change orientation of the therapeutic laser beam relative to the eye.

2. The laser therapeutic system of claim 1 , wherein said images comprise a first image that is generated just prior to treatment of said eye by said laser beam and a second image that is generated prior to when said first image is generated.

3. The laser therapeutic system of claim 1 , wherein said computer executable instructions perform the function of detecting from said images a boundary between an iris and a pupil of said eye.

4. The laser therapeutic system of claim 3 , wherein said computer executable instructions perform the function of detecting from said images a boundary between an iris and a sclera of said eye.

5. The laser therapeutic system of claim 1 , wherein said computer executable instructions perform the function of detecting from said images a boundary between an iris and a sclera of said eye.

6. The laser therapeutic system of claim 1 , wherein said computer executable instructions perform the function of masking out in said images regions of an eyelid of said eye.

7. The laser therapeutic system of claim 1 , wherein said computer executable instructions perform the function of masking out in said images regions of an eyelash of said eye.

8. The laser therapeutic system of claim 1 , wherein said computer executable instructions perform the function of filtering and unwrapping an image of an iris of said eye.

9. The laser therapeutic system of claim 1 , wherein said computer executable instructions perform the function of converting said images from pixel value representation to a feature-based representation.

10. The laser therapeutic system of claim 1 , wherein said computer executable instructions perform the function of measuring correlation strength as a function of proposed cyclotorsion angle based on said images.

11. A laser therapeutic system for performing laser procedures on the lens of a human eye, the system comprising:

a) a therapeutic laser source capable of emitting a therapeutic laser beam;

b) a control system in communication with the therapeutic laser and capable of directing the therapeutic laser beam toward a lens of a dilated eye;

c) an analyzer in communication with the control system; and,

d) a means for determining and compensating for the cyclotorsion of the dilated eye, the means comprising a boundary detection means, a filtering and unwrapping means, and a feature extraction means: whereby the cyclotorsion is determined without singling out and registering particular points in an image of an iris.

12. A laser therapeutic system for performing laser procedures on a human eye, the system comprising:

a) a therapeutic laser source capable of emitting a therapeutic laser beam;

b) a control system in communication with the therapeutic laser capable of directing the therapeutic laser beam toward an eye;

c) an analyzer in communication with the control system; the analyzer comprising:

i) a boundary detection means; the boundary detection means comprising a means for eliminating interference from an eyelid;

ii) a means for filtering and unwrapping an image of an iris;

iii) a means for feature extraction; and,

iv) a means for measuring correlation strength;

d) whereby the system is capable of determining and compensating for the cyclotorsion of the eye in directing the therapeutic laser beam toward the eye.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the system is capable of performing a capsulotomy.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the system is capable of performing corneal incisions.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the interference comprises eyelid interference.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the interference comprises eyelash interference.
