Abstract

Manifold for a medical/surgical waste collection assembly. A shell includes a proximal end base, and a lip extending proximally from the proximal end base. The lip extends around an outlet opening defined in the proximal end base that is off-centered to a longitudinal axis of the shell. A cap including a cap head is coupled to a side wall of the shell. A drip stop may be seated within a space defined by the lip to cover the outlet opening. An arcuate section of the lip may be flush with an adjacent section of the side wall. The cap head may define a through hole, and a flapper valve unit may be coupled to the cap head with another component having ears extending through the through hole. A fence may extend from the cap head and configured to be grasped by a user.

Claims (28)

1 . A manifold for a medical/surgical waste collection assembly including a manifold receiver, the manifold comprising:

a shell comprising a proximal end base, a side wall extending distally from the proximal end base, and a lip extending proximally from the proximal end base, wherein the lip extends around an outlet opening defined in the proximal end base that is off-centered to a longitudinal axis of the shell;

a cap coupled to the side wall of the shell to define a manifold void space, wherein the cap comprises a cap head, and at least one inlet fitting extending from the cap head and configured to be removably coupled with a suction tube; and

a drip stop covering the outlet opening and comprising a base, and a concavo-convex head and separated from the base by a slot defined around an outer perimeter of the base,

wherein an arcuate section of the lip of the shell is flush with an adjacent section of the side wall, and wherein a perimeter section of the proximal end base of the shell is seated within the slot of the drip stop such that the concavo-convex head is disposed within the manifold void space and a section of the base of the drip stop external to the manifold void space is entirely seated within a space defined by the lip of the shell,

wherein the section of the base of the drip stop that external to the manifold void space comprises a tapered annular surface extending inwardly from a proximal end of the drip stop and configured to function as a lead in for a valve boss of the manifold receiver.

2 . The manifold of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end of drip stop is flush with a proximal end of the lip.

3 . The manifold of claim 1 , wherein the inwardly tapered annular surface is a first inwardly tapered annular surface, and wherein the section of the base of the drip stop that external to the manifold void space comprises a second inwardly tapered annular surface having a taper less than a taper of the first inwardly tapered annular surface.

4 . The manifold of claim 3 , wherein the base of the drip stop comprises lips defining another slot having a length configured to be less than an outer diameter of the valve boss.

5 . The manifold of claim 1 , two tabs projecting radially outwardly from a proximal end of the cap, wherein one of the two tabs subtends a larger arc than another one of the two tabs.

6 . The manifold of claim 1 , further comprising a fence extending from the cap head and extending between two adjacent fittings, wherein the fence is configured to be grasped by a user for insertion of the manifold into and removal of the manifold from the manifold receiver.

7 . The manifold of claim 1 , further comprising a flapper valve unit coupled to an inner face of the cap head and comprising a flapper valve configured to cover a port associated with each of the at least one inlet fitting, and flex to open the port with suction being drawn through the manifold.

8 . The manifold of claim 7 , further comprising a rib extending proximally from the inner face of the cap head and surrounding the port.

9 . The manifold of claim 7 , wherein the cap head defines a through hole, wherein the flapper valve unit is coupled to the through hole.

10 . The manifold of claim 7 , further comprising a filter element disposed within an interior of the manifold and disposed between the flapper valve unit and the drip stop.

11 . A manifold for a medical/surgical waste collection assembly including a manifold receiver, the manifold comprising:

a shell comprising a proximal end base, a side wall extending distally from the proximal end base, and a lip extending proximally from the proximal end base, wherein a perimeter section of proximal end base is disposed radially inward relative to the lip and the lip extends around an outlet opening defined in the proximal end base that is off-centered to a longitudinal axis of the shell;

a cap coupled to the side wall of the shell to define a manifold void space, wherein the cap comprises a cap head, and at least one inlet fitting extending from the cap head and configured to be removably coupled with a suction tube; and

a drip stop covering the outlet opening and comprising a base, and a concavo-convex head and separated from the base by a slot defined around an outer perimeter of the base,

wherein the perimeter section of the proximal end base is seated within the slot such that the concavo-convex head is disposed within the manifold void space and a section of the base of the drip stop external to the manifold void space is seated proximal to the proximal end base of the shell and within a space defined by the lip, and wherein a proximal end of the drip stop is flush with a proximal end of the lip of the shell,

wherein the section of the base of the drip stop that external to the manifold void space comprises a tapered annular surface extending inwardly from the proximal end of the drip stop and configured to function as a lead in for a valve boss of the manifold receiver.

12 . The manifold of claim 11 , wherein the inwardly tapered annular surface is a first inwardly tapered annular surface, and wherein the section of the base of the drip stop that external to the manifold void space comprises a second inwardly tapered annular surface having a taper less than a taper of the first inwardly tapered annular surface.

13 . The manifold of claim 11 , wherein the base of the drip stop comprises lips defining another slot.

14 . The manifold of claim 11 , two tabs projecting radially outwardly from a proximal end of the cap, wherein one of the two tabs subtends a larger arc than another one of the two tabs.

15 . The manifold of claim 11 , further comprising a fence extending from the cap head and extending between two adjacent fittings, wherein the fence is configured to be grasped by a user for insertion of the manifold into and removal of the manifold from the manifold receiver.

16 . The manifold of claim 11 , further comprising a flapper valve unit coupled to an inner face of the cap head and comprising a flapper valve configured to cover a port associated with each of the at least one inlet fitting, and flex to open the port with suction being drawn through the manifold.

17 . The manifold of claim 16 , further comprising a rib extending proximally from the inner face of the cap head and surrounding the port.

18 . The manifold of claim 16 , wherein the cap head defines a through hole, wherein the flapper valve unit is coupled to the through hole.
