VARIABLE-SIZE HYDROPHOBICALLY-MODIFIED POLYMERS
In various aspects, the invention provides compositions of variable-length hydrophobically-modified polymers. These variable-length hydrophobes decorated along the hydrophilic polymer backbone provide advanced properties and allow for precise control over the behavior of the resulting amphiphilic polymer, including in aqueous solution. Such control allows for enhanced functionality of the amphiphilic polymer relative to standard single-length hydrophobe grafting designs, including for hemostasis.

47 . A flowable composition of a hydrophobically-modified chitosan, wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan has linear C14 and/or C16 hydrocarbon groups attached to the chitosan backbone.
48 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the composition is a hydrogel.
49 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the composition is a foam.
50 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the composition is an aqueous solution.
51 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan has linear C16 hydrocarbon groups attached to the chitosan backbone.
52 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan has linear C14 hydrocarbon groups attached to the chitosan backbone.
53 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan further comprises hydrophobic groups selected from linear C8 to C12 hydrocarbon groups attached to the chitosan backbone.
54 . The flowable composition of claim 53 , wherein C8 hydrocarbon groups are present at a ratio of 5:1 to 20:1 with respect to the C14 and/or C16 hydrocarbon groups.
55 . The flowable composition of claim 53 , wherein C10 or C12 hydrocarbon groups are present at a ratio of 2:1 to 10:1 with respect to the C14 and/or C16 hydrocarbon groups.
56 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the hydrophobic groups are incorporated by fatty acid anhydride chemistry.
57 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan further comprises C1 to C4 hydrocarbon groups attached to the chitosan backbone.
58 . The flowable composition of claim 57 , wherein the C1 to C4 hydrocarbon groups are present at 20 to 40 mol % with respect to chitosan amines.
59 . The flowable composition of claim 53 , wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan further comprises C1 to C4 hydrocarbon groups attached to the chitosan backbone.
60 . The flowable composition of claim 59 , wherein the C1 to C4 hydrocarbon groups are present at 20 to 40 mol % with respect to chitosan amines.
61 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan has a degree of substitution up to 50% of chitosan amines.
62 . The flowable composition of claim 61 , wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan has a degree of substitution of from 10% to 50% of chitosan amines.
63 . The flowable composition of claim 61 , wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan has a degree of substitution of from 30% to 50% of chitosan amines.
64 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan is present in the composition at 0.1 to about 5% by weight.
65 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan is prepared from a high molecular weight chitosan.
66 . The flowable composition of claim 47 , wherein the hydrophobically-modified chitosan is prepared from a medium molecular weight chitosan.
67 . A method for bleeding control, comprising applying the flowable composition of claim 47 to bleeding tissue.
68 . The method of claim 67 , wherein the bleeding tissue has high exudate or blood flow.
69 . The method of claim 67 , wherein the bleeding tissue is an internal wound.
