Abstract

An explosive downhole tool includes a housing having an upper housing part on one side of a window section and a lower housing part on an opposite side of the window section. An explosive charge is provided within the housing for at least one of cutting and expanding the wall of the tubular. The outer surface of at least one of the upper and lower housing part is rounded so as to be devoid of corners. The rounded surface eliminates the presence of sharp corners that may catch on restrictions or protrusions in a wellbore so that the downhole tool is more easily conveyable within a wellbore. Another explosive downhole tool includes fins extending from the housing. The fins have a height that decreases in a direction away from the housing. The shape of the fins enables the downhole tool to be more easily conveyable within the wellbore.

Claims (45)

1 . An explosive expansion tool, wherein the explosive expansion tool is liner-less to permit expanding, without puncturing, a wall of a downhole tubular, wherein the explosive expansion tool comprises:

a housing comprising an upper housing section and a lower housing section, wherein a majority of an outer surface of at least one of the upper housing section and the lower housing section in cross-section is rounded so as to be devoid of corners;

a first explosive unit disposed within the housing; and

a second explosive unit disposed within the housing,

wherein the first explosive unit and the second explosive unit are:

disposed against each other to form a shaped charge assembly;

liner-less; and

each divided into two or more sections that are attached to each other; and

wherein the explosive expansion tool permits expanding, without puncturing, a diameter of the wall of the downhole tubular.

2 . The explosive expansion tool according to claim 1 , wherein the two or more sections of each of the first explosive unit and the second explosive unit are equal to each other in size and shape.

3 . The explosive expansion tool according to claim 1 , wherein each of the first explosive unit and the second explosive unit comprises a central aperture through which a loading rod of the explosive expansion tool passes.

4 . The explosive expansion tool according to claim 1 , wherein the two or more sections of each of the first explosive unit and the second explosive unit comprise a central section and an outer section that surrounds a circumference of the central section.

5 . A method comprising:

assembling an explosive expansion tool, wherein the explosive expansion tool is liner-less to permit expanding, without puncturing, a diameter of a wall of a downhole tubular, and wherein the assembling of the explosive expansion tool comprises:

attaching a first plurality of explosive sections to each other to form a first explosive unit, wherein each of the first plurality of explosive sections comprises explosive material, and wherein the first explosive unit has a truncated cone shape;

attaching a second plurality of explosive sections to each other to form a second explosive unit, wherein each of the second plurality of explosive sections comprises explosive material, and wherein the second explosive unit has a truncated cone shape; and

positioning the first explosive unit and the second explosive unit against each other to form a shaped charge assembly of the explosive expansion tool;

positioning the shaped charge assembly within a housing assembly, wherein the housing assembly comprises an upper housing section and a lower housing section, wherein a majority of an outer surface of at least one of the upper housing section and the lower housing section in cross-section is rounded so as to be devoid of corners; and

loading the explosive unit onto the explosive expansion tool.

6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

positioning the explosive expansion tool within the wellbore; and

actuating the explosive expansion tool to ignite the first explosive unit and the second explosive unit to expand, without puncturing, the diameter of the wall of the downhole tubular.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein assembling the explosive expansion tool further comprises:

positioning the first explosive unit and the second explosive unit within a housing and against each other between an upper plate and a lower plate to form the shaped charge assembly of the explosive expansion tool.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the shaped charge assembly is a first shaped charge assembly, and wherein the explosive expansion tool is an explosive expansion column tool further comprising a second shaped charge assembly connected to and separated from the first shaped charge assembly by a connector.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the housing and the connector is formed of at least one of:

a dissolvable material configured to dissolve in a liquid solution; and

a frangible material configured to break into relatively small pieces.

10 . The method of claim 5 , wherein each of the first plurality of explosive sections and the second plurality of explosive sections comprises a central section and an outer section that surrounds a circumference of the central section.

11 . The explosive unit according to claim 1 , wherein each of the two or more sections has a mass of 38.8 grams (600 grains) or less.

12 . An explosive expansion tool comprising:

a housing comprising:

an upper housing section;

a lower housing section; and

a window section between the upper housing section and the lower housing section, wherein each of the upper housing section and the lower housing section comprises an outer surface that faces away from the housing, and wherein a majority of the outer surface of at least one of the upper housing section and the lower housing section in cross-section is rounded so as to be devoid of corners; and

an explosive charge configured to expand, without puncturing, a wall of a downhole tubular when detonated, wherein the explosive charge comprises an upper explosive unit and a lower explosive unit, and wherein each of the upper explosive unit and the lower explosive unit is divided into two or more sections that are attached to each other.

13 . The explosive expansion tool according to claim 12 , wherein the two or more sections of each of the upper explosive unit and the lower explosive unit are equal to each other in size and shape.

14 . The explosive expansion tool according to claim 12 , wherein the housing is formed of at least one of:

a dissolvable material configured to dissolve in a liquid solution; and

a frangible material configured to break into relatively small pieces.

15 . The explosive expansion tool according to claim 12 , wherein the housing and the explosive charge form a first shaped charge assembly of the explosive expansion column tool, and wherein the explosive expansion tool is an explosive expansion column tool further comprising a second shaped charge assembly connected to and separated from the first shaped charge assembly by a connector.

16 . The explosive expansion tool according to claim 15 , wherein the connector comprises a hollow tube.

17 . The explosive expansion tool according to claim 15 , wherein the connector is formed of at least one of:

a dissolvable material configured to dissolve in a liquid solution; and

a frangible material configured to break into relatively small pieces.
