Abstract

A method for intraoperatively augmenting a revision implant includes removing a primary implant from a bone, intraoperatively determining a size of a defect of the bone, intraoperatively cutting a bone filler material to the size of the defect, installing the bone filler material at the defect, and installing the revision implant on the bone.

Claims (27)

1. A surgical system, comprising:

a cutting device;

a tracking system configured to detect a location of at least one marker; and

a control system in communication with the tracking system, wherein the control system is programmed to:

determine a pose of the cutting device relative to a bone based on the location of the at least one marker;

determine a revised shape for a bone surface of the bone;

cause the cutting device to cut the bone surface to the revised shape based on the pose of the cutting device relative to the bone surface; and

determine a size for an augment for implantation at the bone surface.

2. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to cause the cutting device to cut the augment to the size.

3. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the augment is a cone.

The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the tracking system is further configured to detect locations of a probe relative to the at least one marker as the probe touches the bone surface subsequent to the cutting device cutting the bone surface, and wherein the control system is configured to determine the size for the augment based on the locations of the probe.

5. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to cause the cutting device to the cut the bone surface to the revised shape by controlling a robotic element of the cutting device to provide a constraint on movement of a cutting element of the cutting device.

6. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is programmed to determine the revised shape for the bone surface of the bone based on an interface area between a primary implant and the bone.

The surgical system of claim 6 , further comprising a probe, wherein the tracking system is configured to track positions of the probe as the probe traces a perimeter of the interface area, and wherein the control system is configured to identify the interface area based on the positions of the probe.

8. A method of operating surgical system, comprising;

detecting, by a tracking system of the surgical system, a location of at least one marker;

determining, by a control system, a pose of a cutting tool of the surgical system relative to a bone based on the location of the at least one marker;

determining, by the control system, a revised shape for bone surface of the bone;

causing, by the control system, the cutting device to cut the bone surface to the revised shape based on the pose of the cutting tool relative to the bone; and

determining, by the control system, a size for an augment for implantation at the bone surface.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising causing, by the control system, the cutting device to cut the augment to the size.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising cutting, by the cutting device the augment to the size.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the augment is a cone.

The method of claim 8 , further comprising detecting, by the tracking system, locations of a probe relative to the at least one marker as the probe touches the bone surface subsequent to the cutting device cutting the bone surface, and wherein determining the size for the augment is performed using the locations of the probe.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein causing the cutting device to cut the bone surface to the revised shape comprises controlling a robotic element of the cutting device to provide a constraint on movement of a cutting element of the cutting device.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining the revised shape for the bone surfaces is performed based on an interface area between a primary implant and the bone.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising identifying the interface area by tracking, by the tracking system, a probe as the probe traces a perimeter of the interface area.
