Abstract

A system is disclosed to support installation of a prosthetic joint or a prosthetic component. The system includes at least one sensor to measure a parameter. The system uses one or more patient specific instruments in conjunction with a tensor to make one or more bone cuts. The patient specific instruments and tensor make the bone cuts such that an installed prosthetic joint is aligned, balanced, loaded correctly, and positioned optimally for performance and reliability. The use of the tensor simplifies the workflow required when using the patient specific instruments. In one embodiment, the patient specific instruments are bone cutting jigs configured for the patient anatomy.

Claims (33)

1 . A method for evaluating a knee joint using a tensor, the method comprising steps of:

moving the knee joint to a flexion position;

placing a tensor in the knee joint;

distracting the knee joint to a first gap using a distraction mechanism of the tensor;

measuring at least a first load value indicating a knee joint tension using a sensor;

displaying the first load value on a computer;

moving the distracted knee joint to a maximum extension position, and

determining whether the knee joint in the maximum extension position is in a full extension position of the knee joint,

wherein the tensor includes a tilting mechanism, a first femoral plate and a second femoral plate.

A method according to claim 1 , wherein if the knee joint hyperextends or does not achieve full extension in the maximum extension position, distracting the knee joint to adjust the first gap to a second gap different from the first gap and moving the distracted knee joint to the maximum extension position to determine whether the knee joint is in the full extension position.

A method according to claim 2 , wherein if the knee joint in the maximum extension position is in a full extension position of the knee joint, moving the knee joint to a maximum flexion position and determining whether the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is equal to a flexion position of at least 90 degrees.

A method according to claim 3 , wherein if the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is less than 90 degrees, distracting the knee joint to adjust the first gap to a second gap different from the first gap and moving the knee joint to the maximum flexion position to determine whether the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is equal to the flexion position of at least 90 degrees.

A method according to claim 1 , wherein if the knee joint hyperextends or does not achieve full extension in the maximum extension position, adjusting the knee joint tension by soft tissue tensioning to a second load value different from the first load value and moving the distracted knee joint to the maximum extension position to determine whether the knee joint is in the full extension position.

A method according to claim 5 , wherein if the knee joint in the maximum extension position is in a full extension position of the knee joint, moving the knee joint to a maximum flexion position and determining whether the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is equal to a flexion position of at least 90 degrees.

A method according to claim 6 , wherein if the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is less than 90 degrees, adjusting the knee joint tension by soft tissue tensioning and moving the knee joint to the maximum flexion position to determine whether the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is equal to the flexion position of at least 90 degrees.

8 . A method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of moving the knee joint to a flexion position includes a step of moving the knee joint to a 10 degrees flexion position.

9 . A method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of distracting the knee joint includes a step of balancing the knee joint by tilting the first femoral plate of the tensor such that the first load value on the first femoral plate is equal to a second load value on the second femoral plate.

10 . A method for evaluating a knee joint using a tensor, the method comprising steps of:

moving the knee joint to a first position;

placing a tensor in the knee joint;

distracting the knee joint to a first gap using a distraction mechanism of the tensor;

measuring a first load value indicating a knee joint tension using a sensor;

moving the distracted knee joint to a maximum extension position, and

determining whether the knee joint in the maximum extension position is in a full extension position of the knee joint,

wherein if the knee joint hyperextends in the maximum extension position, distracting the knee joint to adjust the first gap to a second gap different from the first gap and moving the distracted knee joint to the maximum extension position to determine whether the knee joint is in the full extension position.

A method according to claim 10 , wherein if the knee joint does not achieve full extension in the maximum extension position, distracting the knee joint to adjust the first gap to a second gap different from the first gap and moving the distracted knee joint to the maximum extension position to determine whether the knee joint is in the full extension position.

A method according to claim 10 , wherein if the knee joint in the maximum extension position is in a full extension position of the knee joint, moving the distracted knee joint to a maximum flexion position and determining whether the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is equal to a flexion position of at least 90 degrees.

A method according to claim 12 , wherein if the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is less than 90 degrees, distracting the knee joint to adjust the first gap to a second gap different from the first gap and moving the distracted knee joint to the maximum flexion position to determine whether the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is equal to the flexion position of at least 90 degrees.

A method according to claim 10 , wherein if the knee joint hyperextends in the maximum extension position, adjusting the knee joint tension by soft tissue tensioning to a second load value different from the first load value and moving the distracted knee joint to the maximum extension position to determine whether the knee joint is in the full extension position.

A method according to claim 10 , wherein if the knee joint does not achieve full extension in the maximum extension position, adjusting the knee joint tension by soft tissue tensioning to a second load value different from the first load value and moving the distracted knee joint to the maximum extension position to determine whether the knee joint is in the full extension position.

A method according to claim 15 , wherein if the knee joint in the maximum extension position is in a full extension position of the knee joint, moving the distracted knee joint to a maximum flexion position and determining whether the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is equal to a flexion position of at least 90 degrees.

A method according to claim 15 , wherein if the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is less than 90 degrees, adjusting the knee joint tension by soft tissue tensioning and moving the distracted knee joint to the maximum flexion position to determine whether the knee joint in the maximum flexion position is equal to the flexion position of at least 90 degrees.

18 . A method according to claim 10 , wherein the step of moving the knee joint to the first position includes a step of moving the knee joint to a 10 degrees flexion position.
