Abstract

A method for reconstituting a reagent within a reagent pack including one or more wells and at least one of the wells containing a lyophilized reagent comprises the steps of receiving reagent packs into a reagent pack input carousel, transferring one reagent pack with a rotary distributor from the input carousel to a reagent pack storage carousel, retrieving the reagent pack from the storage carousel with the rotary distributor and placing the reagent pack into a reagent pack loading station, and dispensing a reconstitution reagent with an automated pipettor into the well containing the lyophilized reagent to form a reconstituted reagent.

Claims (31)

1. A method for reconstituting a reagent comprising:

(a) receiving one or more reagent packs into a reagent pack input carousel configured to hold a plurality of reagent packs, wherein each reagent pack of the one or more reagent packs includes one or more wells and at least one well of the one or more wells contains a lyophilized reagent;

(b) with a rotary distributor, transferring one reagent pack of the one or more reagent packs from the reagent pack input carousel to a reagent pack station of a reagent pack storage carousel;

(c) retrieving the one reagent pack from the reagent pack station of the reagent pack storage carousel with the rotary distributor;

(d) placing the one reagent pack retrieved in step (c) into a reagent pack loading station; and

(e) after step (d), reconstituting at least one lyophilized reagent in the one reagent pack by dispensing a reconstitution reagent into the at least one well of the one reagent pack that contains the lyophilized reagent with an automated pipettor to form a reconstituted reagent.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, after step (e):

withdrawing the reconstituted reagent from the at least one well of the one reagent pack with the automated pipettor;

if no wells of the one reagent pack contain a lyophilized reagent, discarding the one reagent pack; and

if at least one well of the one reagent pack contains a lyophilized reagent, transferring the one reagent pack with the rotary distributor from the reagent pack loading station to a reagent pack station of the reagent pack storage carousel.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying an electrostatic charge to at least one of the reagent pack input carousel and the reagent pack storage carousel to hold a reagent present in a reagent pack of the one or more reagent packs held on the reagent pack input carousel or the reagent pack storage carousel.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reagent pack input carousel is disposed in a carousel compartment, and wherein the method further comprises moving the carousel compartment to an open position to allow access to the reagent pack input carousel and to a closed position to prevent access to the reagent pack input carousel.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein step (b) comprises positioning the reagent pack input carousel so as to align a reagent pack of the one or more reagent packs held on the reagent pack input carousel with a slot formed in the carrousel compartment and removing the one reagent pack from the reagent pack input carousel through the slot with the rotary distributor.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising reading a machine-readable code on each reagent pack of the one or more reagent packs held on the reagent pack input carousel with a code reader operatively disposed with respect to the reagent pack input carousel.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reagent pack input carousel is rotatable around an axis of rotation and comprises a plurality of reagent pack stations arranged around an outer perimeter of the reagent pack input carousel, and

wherein each reagent pack station of the plurality reagent pack stations is configured to hold one reagent pack and is oriented at an angle with of respect to a radial orientation relative to the axis of rotation.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (b) comprises:

withdrawing the one reagent pack from the reagent pack input carrousel into an enclosure of the rotary distributor with an extendible hook of the rotary distributor;

changing a position of the enclosure to a position for transferring a reagent pack into the reagent pack storage carousel; and

pushing the one reagent pack from the enclosure into the reagent pack storage carousel with the extendible hook.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein step (c) comprises withdrawing the one reagent pack from the reagent pack storage carrousel into the enclosure of the rotary distributor with the extendible hook of the rotary distributor, and wherein step (d) comprises:

changing a position of the enclosure to a position for transferring the one reagent pack into the reagent pack loading station; and

pushing the one reagent pack from the enclosure into reagent pack loading station with the extendible hook.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein changing a position of the enclosure to a position for transferring the one reagent pack into the reagent pack loading station comprises rotating the enclosure around an axis of rotation from a position for withdrawing the one reagent pack from the reagent pack storage carrousel to the position for transferring the one reagent pack into the reagent pack loading station.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein changing the position of the enclosure to a position for transferring the one reagent pack into the reagent pack storage carousel comprises vertically moving the enclosure from a position for withdrawing the one reagent pack from the reagent pack input carrousel to the position for transferring the one reagent pack into the reagent pack storage carousel.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, after step (e):

withdrawing the reconstituted reagent from the at least one well with the automated pipettor; and

after withdrawing the reconstituted reagent from the at least one well with the automated pipettor, discarding the one reagent pack by moving the one reagent pack with the rotary distributor from the reagent pack loading station to a reagent pack trash chute.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reagent pack storage carousel is disposed within a reagent pack storage compartment, and

wherein the method further comprises maintaining an interior space of the reagent pack storage compartment at a temperature below an ambient temperature outside the reagent pack storage compartment.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising controlling humidity within the interior space of the reagent pack storage compartment.
