Abstract

A system for generating clock signals for a photonic quantum computing system includes a first pump photon source, a first photon-pair source optically coupled to the first pump photon source, and a first photodetector optically coupled to the first photon-pair source. The system also includes a first clock generator electrically coupled to the first photodetector, a second pump photon source, a second photon-pair source optically coupled to the second pump photon source, and a second photodetector optically coupled to the second photon-pair source. The system further includes a second clock generator electrically coupled to the second photodetector and a clock mediator coupled to the first clock generator and the second clock generator.

Claims (58)

1. A system for generating clock signals for a photonic quantum computing system, the system comprising:

a first pump photon source configured to generate a first plurality of first pump photon pulses at a first repetition rate;

a first photon-pair source optically coupled to the first pump photon source;

a first photodetector optically coupled to the first photon-pair source and configured to generate a second plurality of first electrical pulses in response to detection of at least a first portion of the first plurality of first pump photon pulses at the first repetition rate;

a first clock generator electrically coupled to the first photodetector and configured to convert the second plurality of first electrical pulses into a third plurality of first clock signals at the first repetition rate;

a second pump photon source configured to generate a fourth plurality of second pump photon pulses at a second repetition rate;

a second photon-pair source optically coupled to the second pump photon source;

a second photodetector optically coupled to the second photon-pair source and configured to generate a fifth plurality of second electrical pulses in response to detection of at least a second portion of the fourth plurality of second pump photon pulses at the second repetition rate;

a second clock generator electrically coupled to the second photodetector and configured to convert the fifth plurality of second electrical pulses into a sixth plurality of second clock signals at the second repetition rate; and

a clock mediator coupled to the first clock generator and the second clock generator and configured generate a plurality of master clock signals at a master repetition rate, wherein the plurality of master clock signals are generated based on the third plurality of first clock signals and the sixth plurality of second clock signals.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more mixers operable to combine the third plurality of first clock signals with the sixth plurality of second clock signals to generate the plurality of master clock signals.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the clock mediator comprises a frequency reference generation circuit operable to combine the third plurality of first clock signals with the sixth plurality of second clock signals to generate the plurality of master clock signals.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the clock mediator comprises one or more frequency references.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first photon-pair source, the second photon-pair source, the first photodetector, the second photodetector, the first clock generator, the second clock generator, and the clock mediator are disposed in a package.

6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a cryostat, wherein the system is disposed in the cryostat.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a cryostat, wherein:

the first pump photon source and the second pump photon source are disposed outside the cryostat; and

the first photon-pair source, the second photon-pair source, the first photodetector, the second photodetector, the first clock generator, the second clock generator, and the clock mediator are disposed in the cryostat.

The system of claim 1 , further comprising a single chip placed inside a cryostat, wherein the first photon-pair source, the second photon-pair source, the first photodetector, the second photodetector, the first clock generator, the second clock generator, and the clock mediator are disposed on the single chip placed inside the cryostat.

9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a first waveguide optically coupled to the first pump photon source and a second waveguide optically coupled to the second pump photon source.

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a cryostat, wherein the first waveguide and the second waveguide are disposed outside the cryostat.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the first photon-pair source comprises:

a first waveguide operable to receive the first plurality of first pump photon pulses generated by the first pump photon source;

a first resonator optically coupled to the first waveguide and including a first nonlinear optical material operable to convert a third portion of each pump photon pulse of the first plurality of first pump photon pulses into a first photon-pair; and

a second waveguide optically coupled to the first resonator; and

the second photon-pair source comprises:

a third waveguide operable to receive the fourth plurality of second pump photon pulses generated by the second pump photon source;

a second resonator optically coupled to the first waveguide and including a second nonlinear optical material operable to convert a fourth portion of each pump photon pulse of the fourth plurality of second pump photon pulses into a second photon-pair; and

a fourth waveguide optically coupled to the second resonator.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first resonator and the second resonator each comprise one or more ring resonators.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first photon-pair comprises a signal photon and a heralding photon, wherein at least one of the signal photon or the heralding photon comprises a qubit.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second photon-pair comprises a signal photon and a heralding photon, wherein at least one of the signal photon or the heralding photon comprises a qubit.

15. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) including the first photon-pair source, the first photodetector, the second photon-pair source, and the second photodetector; and

an electronic integrated circuit (EIC) including the first clock generator, the second clock generator, and the clock mediator.

16. A method for generating clock signals for a photonic quantum computing system, the method comprising:

generating, by a first pump photon source, a first plurality of first pump photon pulses at a first repetition rate;

generating, by a first photodetector, a second plurality of first electrical pulses in response to detection of at least a first portion of the first plurality of first pump photon pulses at the first repetition rate;

converting, by a first clock generator, the second plurality of first electrical pulses into a third plurality of first clock signals at the first repetition rate;

generating, by a second pump photon source, a fourth plurality of second pump photon pulses at a second repetition rate;

generating, by a second photodetector, a fifth plurality of second electrical pulses in response to detection of at least a second portion of the fourth plurality of second pump photon pulses at the second repetition rate;

converting, by a second clock generator, the fifth plurality of second electrical pulses into a sixth plurality of second clock signals at the second repetition rate; and

generating, by a clock mediator, a plurality of master clock signals at a master repetition rate, the plurality of master clock signals generated based on the third plurality of first clock signals and the sixth plurality of second clock signals.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

receiving, by a first photon-pair source, at least a third portion of the first plurality of first pump photon pulses from the first pump photon source;

converting, by the first photon-pair source, a fourth portion of the first plurality of first pump photon pulses into a first photon-pair; and

outputting, by the first photon-pair source, the first photon-pair; and

outputting, by the first photon-pair source, a fifth portion of the first plurality of first pump photon pulses; and

receiving, by a second photon-pair source, at least a sixth portion of the fourth plurality of second pump photon pulses from the second pump photon source;

converting, by the second photon-pair source, a seventh portion of the fourth plurality of second pump photon pulses into a second photon-pair;

outputting, by the second photon-pair source, the second photon-pair; and

outputting, by the second photon-pair source, an eight portion of the fourth plurality of second pump photon pulses.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

converting, by the first photon-pair source, a ninth portion of each of a first subset of the first plurality of first pump photon pulses into a first photon-pair non-deterministically; and

converting, by the second photon-pair source, a tenth portion of each of a second subset of the fourth plurality of second pump photon pulses into a second photon-pair non-deterministically.

19. The method of claim 16 , further comprising performing one or more diagnostic measurements on at least one of the third plurality of first clock signals or the sixth plurality of second clock signals.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the one or more diagnostic measurements includes Allan deviation, a frequency jitter, or a phase relative to a photon generation time.
