Abstract

A percussive therapy device includes a housing, a motor, a reciprocation shaft coupled to the motor and configured to reciprocate when the motor is active, an infrared radiation emitter contained in the housing, and a fan. The housing includes a window including a surface. The fan is configured to direct air along an air flow path, and a portion of the air flow path extends along the surface of the window.

Claims (43)

1 . A percussive massage device comprising:

a housing, the housing comprising a window, and the window comprising an inward facing surface;

a motor contained in the housing;

a reciprocation shaft coupled to the motor and configured to reciprocate when the motor is active;

an infrared radiation emitter contained in the housing, wherein the infrared emitter is configured to direct infrared radiation through the window and outside the housing, and wherein the infrared radiation emitter is positioned such that the inward facing surface of the window faces toward the infrared radiation emitter;

a fan configured to direct air along an air flow path, wherein a portion of the air flow path extends across and in contact with the inward facing surface of the window that faces the infrared radiation emitter;

a heat sink to which the infrared emitter is mounted, wherein the heat sink cooperates with the fan and the window to define the air flow path;

wherein a heat sink opening is defined through the heat sink, the fan is configured to mobilize air along the air flow path, and an exiting portion of the air flow path extends from the window to the fan through the heat sink opening; and

wherein the infrared radiation emitter comprises an LED array comprising infrared LEDs and a board to which the infrared LEDs are mounted, and wherein the board comprises a board opening aligned with the heat sink opening such that the exiting portion of the air flow path extends through the board.

2 . The percussive massage device of claim 1 , wherein the exiting portion of the air flow path extends through the board opening before reaching the heat sink opening.

3 . The therapeutic device of claim 1 , wherein an entering portion of the air flow path is defined through the heat sink opening, and the fan and heat sink are respectively configured such that the entering portion of the flow path is upstream of the exiting portion of the air flow path.

4 . The therapeutic device of claim 3 , wherein the heat sink comprises a tray to which the infrared emitter is mounted and walls extending from the tray toward the housing such that the heat sink and window define an enclosed space within which the infrared radiation emitter is disposed.

5 . The therapeutic device of claim 4 , wherein the heat sink opening is defined through the tray and the board opening is defined through one of the walls.

6 . The therapeutic device of claim 5 , wherein the heat sink comprises:

a first integrally formed piece that comprises the wall through which the board opening is defined and a frame that contacts the window; and

a second integrally formed piece that comprises the tray, wherein the second integrally formed piece is fastened to the first integrally formed piece.

7 . A percussive massage device comprising:

a housing comprising an extension;

a window positioned in the extension, wherein the window comprises a distal facing window edge that extends along an edge axis;

a motor contained in the housing;

a reciprocation shaft coupled to the motor and configured to reciprocate along a proximal-distal axis when the motor is active, the reciprocation shaft comprising a distal end configured for connection to a massage attachment;

an infrared radiation emitter contained in the extension and configured to direct infrared radiation parallel to an infrared axis that intersects the proximal-distal axis and the edge of the extension, the infrared radiation emitter comprising a board and an infrared array mounted to the board;

a heat sink, wherein the heat sink comprises a tray to which the infrared radiation emitter is mounted, opposed sidewalls, and an end wall, wherein the opposed sidewalls, end wall, tray, and window define an enclosed space within which the infrared radiation emitter is disposed; and

a fan configured to drive air flow along a surface of the window and through the heat sink, and to ventilate the enclosed space within which the infrared radiation emitter is disposed.

8 . The percussive massage device of claim 7 , wherein the infrared array comprises a plurality of infrared LEDs arrayed on an emitter plane that is normal to the infrared axis and intersects the edge axis.

9 . The percussive massage device of claim 7 , wherein the housing comprises the window and the infrared axis passes through the window.

10 . The percussive massage device of claim 7 , wherein the infrared axis intersects the window edge with a non-zero angle of incidence.

11 . The percussive massage device of claim 7 , wherein the extension comprises a first extension edge defined on a distal facing side of the extension, the first extension edge extends along the edge axis, the extension comprises a second extension edge defined on a proximal facing side of the extension, and the first extension edge and second extension edge converge with increasing distance from the reciprocation shaft.

12 . The percussive massage device of claim 7 , wherein the extension of the housing is a handle portion, and wherein the extension extends along an extension axis that intersects the infrared axis and the proximal-distal axis.

13 . A percussive massage device comprising:

a housing comprising;

an extension that comprises an edge defined on a distal facing side of the extension and extending along an edge axis, and

a window comprising a window surface;

a motor contained within the housing;

a reciprocation shaft coupled to the motor and configured to reciprocate along a proximal-distal axis when the motor is active; and

an infrared radiation emitter configured to direct infrared radiation parallel to an infrared axis and through the window surface; wherein a distal end of the reciprocation shaft is configured for connection to a massage attachment;

a heat sink comprising a tray to which the infrared radiation emitter is mounted, wherein the tray extends from a first end to a second end, the first end of the tray being between the proximal-distal axis and the second end of the tray, and the edge of the extension being farther from the second end of the tray than from the first end of the tray; and

a fan, wherein the heat sink and the window cooperate to define an air flow path comprising a first portion extending across and in contact with the window surface and a second portion extending through the heat sink, and wherein the fan is configured to mobilize air along the air flow path such that the first portion of the air flow path is upstream of the second portion of the air flow path.

14 . The percussive massage device of claim 13 , wherein the housing comprises a handle portion in which the infrared emitter is disposed.

15 . The percussive massage device of claim 13 , wherein the proximal-distal axis intersects the infrared axis distally of a distal end of the reciprocation shaft.

16 .
